Laidlaw. 7th Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers.
"For most conspicuous bravery prior to an assault on German Trenches near
Loos and Hill 70 on 25th Sept.1915.During the worst of the bombardment,
Piper Laidlaw seeing his Company was badly shaken from the effects of gas,
with absolute coolness and disregard of danger,mounted the parapet, marched up and down and played his Company out of the trench.The effect
of his splendid example was immediate and the Company charged out to the assault.Piper Laidlaw continued playing his pipes until wounded."

Daniel Laidlaw was invested with his Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace on 3rd Feb.1916.

Laidlaw having enlisted in the 7th Bn KOSB at Berwick on Tweed in 1914, served just over 20 years with the Regiment,retiring as a Sgt Piper when he was 60 yrs old-he had prior service with the Durham Light Infantry.When he left
the Regiment; he lapsed into obscurity and died aged 74 on 2nd June 1950
at the farm hamlet of Shoresdean,which was 6or7 miles from Berwick.He was
quietly interred in St Cuthberts Churchyard at Norham on Tweed.
A ceremony took place in this churchyard on 2nd June 2002; to place a headstone over the grave of Piper Daniel Laidlaw VC-The Piper of Loos-this
project was organised by the KOSB Museum in Berwick on Tweed and by members of the Laidlaw family.
