Hi all,

I have come across an image of a Captain of the Blue Star Line in an RN uniform. Anyone know why this would be?

I know he was Merchant Navy in WW2 so why would he be wearing the uniform in possibly the 1960's.

This is not a RN uniform, have a look at the cap badge. The rings on the cuff are similar, if not the same design as RN, but the cap badge differentiates.
All Merchant Navy captains probably look the same in their best uniform but their cap badge would be that of the company they work for.

Braid with the loop was still in use in 86 with BP, though as you can see the profile is narrower than RN.

Perhaps Blue Star was one of those who wore the loop as did BP.

A number of variations have been used in the MN over the years, second image shows a group of RFA officers from 52, wearing the more common diamond, and interestingly just a straightforward braid without loop or diamond.

If you try here http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/forumdisplay.php?f=274 you will probably get more information, post the picture and someone will probably tell you his name and life story.

Both images my own property.

Thanks I was talking about the jacket as I understand the cap is "Blue star line"

The jacket style was common to RN and several merchant shipping companies, including the Blue Star line
