Default Australian Navy Adelaide frigates for the Polish Navy?

Poland takes seriously Australian offer of selling two Adelaide (OHP) frigates a parliamentary defence group member said just recently.
The Australian Gvt insists on quick response from the Polish side and the answer will be given this year.
It is said the ships would be purchased for one dollar each, much more (of course) for the relatively new upgrade of the ships but still the price would be very beneficial.
This would increase number of the Polish OHP frigates to four from the present two ships (ORP Kosciuszko and ORP Pulaski).
Just recently the Polish MOD has cancelled the contract on four modern navy tugs so nothing for sure.

By the end of 2017 the decision on purchasing three submarines will be taken.
There are offers from France (Scorpene class), SAAB (A26 type) and German Thyssen-Krupp which offers HDW212 or 214 types already ordered by S.Korea, Greece and Portugal.
Poland insists on fitting the subs with the Tomahawk missiles - if the weapon is not available from the US the French offer has the important advantage because Scorpenes can launch cruise missiles (NCM) with the range of 1000km.

Regards,

GD

Greendragon: The Australian offer, on the face of it, would seem to be a good opportunity for Poland. They are equipped with the Mark 41 missile launch system as well as facilities for one helicopter.

Correct Brian, they have an 8 cell Mk 41 quad packed with ESSM and the Mk13 launcher capable of holding 40 x SM2.
They are very capable AAW ships since their upgrades.
Also very capable ASW ships, the only deficiency IMHO is in SuW.
The Australian built HMA ships Newcastle 05 and Melbourne 06 are much younger ships than the others and from all reports much better built so they will be a bargain for Poland if the sale goes ahead.

No doubt Sydney and Darwin will be sunk as dive wrecks, so to see the last two FFG's carry on under a different flag would be a superb outcome.

I'd say we got our money's worth out of the Adelaide class. They have been a great success story in RAN service.

There are from time to time some discussion here about future of the Polish Navy (PN).
Od course the key factor is money, next one : money and so on.
Obvious thing.
Tere is number who claim the PN ships are old and there is a need to replace them with new ones.
Quite a lot voices complain our two OHP ships are expensive in servicing/maintenance, need costly repairs, spare parts for the Seasprites are not easily accessible and generally they are not too good because they are not too new.
It is alas not mentioned that PN has got them for free from the USN so balance of costs is - probably - still for the PN side .
The same sort of critics say that about some 100 Leopard MkA tanks also presented to the Polish by Germany - the same attitude shown and reminds someone who is given a Mercedes of good year of production and low mileage and complain that it's servicing is costly.

I do not think the maximum plan of modernisation of the PN is a realistic approach and patching needs with realiable improved ships or other equipment sounds good.
Might be the AAW capability of the frigates would improve significantly/to some extend the Polish air defence at least in the Baltic operational area.
The Polish ships with any AAW capability are only a/m two OHP frigates - the rest of the PN ships has something for "self defence" and it usually consists of couple of 76mm, 23mm cannons, Striela type IR missiles (navalized) and that's all.

Purchasing the RAN frigates would mark change of the PN from the small ships Baltic operating fleet to something bigger, reaching the boundaries of a medium size navy.
The big advantage is the PN can get two very well armed, modernized warships in matter of let's say in 12 months, all the systems fully workable, tested in numerous trainings-exercises, no teethening problems of new ships.

Certainly the purchase needs a really good evaluation of maintenance/servicing costs of the ships to their life expectancy.
If a banner of the inspection team says "they are too old" the result will be negative but if it is to be done right way might be the two Australian Navy workhorses - or rather seahorses - will find a good pier in Poland.

Regards,

GD
