It will be interesting to see when these new ships will operate with USS Bonhomme Richard LHD 6. Perhaps some USMC AV-8B's will get to try out those ski-jumps?

NUSHIP/HMAS Adelaide commissions tomorrow at Fleet base East GI.

Its good to see the RAN back in business with two major units with flat tops and I know the RN'ers here will feel the same when QE and PoW are commissioned.
I've linked one small article out of many. Greenies never looked like this in my dayhttp://news.navy.gov.au/en/Dec2015/F...1#.Vl_Xuzahdjo

Can anyone tell me why Nu Ship Adelaide is 01, while HMAS Canberra is 02 ?
Was the Adelaide ordered first ? or is there some other reason ?

My understanding is that the previous Adelaide was 01 & Canberra was 02 (both OHP class frigates). The numbering of the new vessels merely perpetuates this.

A proposal for them, any way.

I doubt they will be purchased - but then the RAN did back off from the ASW version of the MRH-90 to stick with an H-60 variant, so perhaps they will insist on a "properly marinated attack helo".

The Australian Army's Airbus Tiger ARHs are not "marinized" - they have materials that hate seawater, and lack sufficient anti-corrosion protections.

However, this could possibly be remedied, if the decision to do so is made:

Note that the Tiger HAD is an improved version of the Tiger HAP - while the Aussie Tiger ARH is a different improvement of the HAP.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euroco...iger#Tiger_HAD
Quote:
In January 2016, it was announced that France was working with Australia, Germany, and Spain to define a proposed further upgrade of the Tiger HAD, referred to as the Tiger Mk3. A key aspect of this upgrade, being scheduled to take place around 2023, is to be the adoption of a common anti-tank missile, as well as other improvements in areas such as the communication system.
So the Tiger Mk3 could also be a navalized version, considering that Spain & France also operate HDs, and would benefit from such navalization.

With increased excercises with the USMC, there may be a push for more material commonality?

The Tigers have been problematic for the ADF. Serviceability and performance haven't been as advertised and patience is waning in some quarters.

There has been discussion about the cost benefit of either upgrading the Tigers or ditching them and purchasing AH1Z Vipers for use on the LHDs.

Not sure where it will end up but certainly the wisdom of acquiring Euro is questioned and the sustainment problem will certainly be eased if a change is made.

HMAS Stuart was lifted onto the hard at Henderson today. She is the last of the ANZAC class to undergo the Anti Ship Missile Defence Upgrade and when she completes I May 2017 all 8 ships will be fitted with the distinctive "pergola" mounting the CEAFAR radars.
For those interested there is a time lapse video of the lift on the RAN website.
Coincidentally, BAE Systems Australia has just signed a $2b sustainment agreement over 8 years with the Aust. govt. for the Anzacs. Scope of work includes improving the ship's engines, propulsion, lighting, heating, cooling, and comms systems and work will begin at Henderson in April next year with the first ship HMAS Perth.

Mods, sorry but please move to the ANZAC FFH thread cheers

Default HMAS Adelaide (L01) Loses Anchor

What circumstances would lead to a loss of anchor - paying out to the end of the chain and snapping or not calculating depth accurately to the amount of chain paid out (anchor not hitting bottom) and weight causing the chain to snap?

http://www.theadvocate.com.au/story/...anchor-at-sea/

There is a famous video on you tube of the USS Tarawa (LHA-1) losing its anchor in 2001 that the US Navy then circulated to educate sailors on what not to do.

If salvage of the anchor is undertaken do they separate the anchor from the amount of chain still attached to it?

The RAN is at last returning to Task Group operations a position it has not been able to achieve since the loss of Melbourne CVS 21, in the early 1980s.
Since that time we have been a basic frigate navy, an absolute disgrace considering the wealth of the nation.

Exercise Ocean Raider (the first of the name) - LHD Adelaide, FFGs Melbourne & Newcastle, FFHs Parramatta & Perth, and MHCs Gascoyne & Huon sailed from Sydney, while FFH Warramunga and "2 subs" sailed from Fremantle. Joining them at sea is FFG Darwin (returning from New Zealand).

1 LHD, 3 FFG, 2 FF, 2 MHC, 2 SSK

Yep - a proper task group!

Commander Richard Westoby RAN ex Royal Marines has been honoured by his new service for the way he has led the development of amphibious capability into the RAN on a far greater and more complex scale than the service has ever encountered.
We thank him for his leadership, and service.

I see from the below photo taken a few days ago during exercise Ocean Explorer off Western Australia she is still missing her port side bow anchor, good to see it has not hindered her operationally...
