I found a thread here with some very nice photos thanks for that, and any additional suggestions are very much appreciated. It must have been tough duty in those old boats, looking at the exposed con station on the conning tower, and imagining what the quarters must have been like with that stage of technology, it must have been very hard. I wonder if there are any good accounts written by officers or crew of that era. I suppose the mortality rate was less than in WWII, i wonder what the overall figures of total number of boats and total number of ships sunk might me. They had some spectacular successes for sure, but it sounds like the convoy system did the trick for the allies in both wars.

If you're looking for crew accounts, try this site. A lot of copyright expired texts from the era you are interested in such as this:

http://www.archive.org/details/WasJe...bootWissenMuss

I did a quick search of 'uboat' for you:

http://www.archive.org/search.php?qu...iatype%3Atexts

The problem you may have is any accounts will be in German. But you'll only get out of it the same effort (searching) that you put into it.

I dont mind the german part, i can do some and my father can help with some too. He did not want us to learn it but he is fluent and was there during the war.

I had three cousins who were U boat skippers in the WWII but they went down with their boats.

thanks for that ...i tried a search and found that one thread and will keep working on it. thanks for that link for references. It is a remarkable era to read about the early days of the U boats in Germany, it sounds like they worked very hard on the research and many of the boats in actual service were actually semi experimental it sounds like.

You can obtain a very detailed plan of the S.M. U-Kreuzer U 139 Kapitänleutnant Schwieger from Christian Schmidt in Germany.

Although all the aircraft were lost and no significant damage was done to the German fleet, all the pilots were decorated for their bravery and Lt-Cdr Esmonde received the first Fleet Air Arm VC to be awarded, albeit posthumously. On the 1st of August 1798, thirteen French ships of the line sat anchored in Aboukir Bay off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt, in support of Napoleon who was inland with his troops attempting to conquer the country. As nighttime approached so did Lord Horatio Nelson and the British fleet. Nelson had been hunting Napoleon at sea for months; at Aboukir Bay he had found the French fleet, trapped and unprepared for battle. Nelsons audacious plan was to attack the French on their unprotected prot side, the plan had its risks; the whole of the British fleet could run aground in the shallows - but Nelson knew the waters too well. The Battle of the Nile was one of the most decisive in the history of naval warfare. By the end of the battle nearly all the French ships were sunk or captured. The 124-gun flagship - and the pride of the French navy - LOrient, had exploded with such ferocity that it halted the battle for over ten minutes. Napoleons ability to dominate the region had been crushed, whilst Nelson was to become a hero throughout the whole of Britain.

Flying as Leader of B Flight, 41 Sqn, on 15th August 1940, Pilot Officer Ted Shipman and the rest of his flight found themselves among a mass of Messerschmitt Bf.110s that had been detailed to escort a bomber force of Heinkel He111s on a raid on the North of England. Having made one head-on attack on one of the Bf.110s, Shipman manoeuvred his Spitfire Mk.1 onto the tail of another and fired a long burst into it. This was M8+CH of Oberleutnant Hans-Ulrich Kettling of 1./ZG76 and rear Gunner / Radio Operator O/ Gefr Volk, whose starboard engine burst into flames and disappeared into the dense cloudbase. Shipman claimed this initially as a probable, but it was later confirmed as a victory when the aircraft was found to have crash landed at Streatham Nr Barnard Castle. Spitfire K9805 (EB-L) is depicted breaking off the attack as Kettling's stricken Bf.110 begins to burn. Ted Shipman would go on to serve with the Royal Air Force until December 1959 retiring as a Wing Commander. Ted would also go onto become friends with Hans-Ulrich Kettling, the pilot he shot down.
