I think this is a Norwegian ULA class submarine, pictured in the Clyde yesterday.

Looks like a Ula to me - possibly a participant in Exercise Joint Warrior.

HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen (F310) - Navigation or Running Lights as illuminated on arrival at Gibraltar 21st May 2013

It's not just the RN's Type 23's that display their Navigation or Running lights in this or a similar manner.

This post gives an indication of just one the possible combinations, relating to the illumination (or otherwise) of the Main Lights and/or Auxiliary/Back-up/Emergency Navigation or Running Lights.

The following three attachments show the lights illuminated as follows:-
Aft Masthead Light(s) - upper of the two lights illuminated with White light, high on foremast.
Fwd Masthead Lights - lower of the two lights illuminated with White light, atop a housing on bridge roof.
Port Navigation Light(s) - lower of the two lights illuminated with Red light, above port bridge wing side windows, fwd of the aft facing door
Stbd Navigation Light(s) - lower of the two lights illuminated with Green light, above stbd bridge wing side windows, fwd of the aft facing door.

Attachments all images are derived from those posted by Daniel/gibdan in the Gibraltar thread, on the Photo Galleries forum.

1st; taken off the port bow and showing two white and one red light.
2nd; taken from very fine off the stbd bow (almost dead ahead) and showing two white and one green light - the port red light is 'just' obscured because of the angle of the photograph... just as it should be!!
3rd; taken from off the stbd bow and showing two white and one green light.

Having widened this topic into this forum, can anyone advise the reason for the variation of upper and/or lower combinations of lights illuminated, in their respective positions on the a) foremast b) atop a housing on bridge roof and c) above the respective bridge wing side windows, fwd of the aft facing door?
