Canada's last airworthy Lancaster to leave for U.K. tour

She left Goose Bay this morning for the seven and a half hour flight to Iceland.

Some good photos on this live blog:

She made it into Kef!

Won't clutter up this thread with anymore postings - anyone who is interested can follow her progress on the CBC Live blog at my previous post.

Nice to see our Canadian one back in the air after her engine changeout.

I went down to Goodwood on Friday, to see the two Lancasters. They looked magnificent.

Hopefully her flight home will be as uneventful as was her flight to the UK in August. It will be good to have her home where she belongs.

Looks as though her flight home is proving a little more difficult than her flight to the UK!

(From the Hamilton Spectator)

Hamiltonís Lancaster bomber grounded for a second day in Iceland

"Wind and rain in Keflavik Iceland is keeping Hamilton's Lancaster on the ground for a second day, delaying the iconic bomber's return to Hamilton."

Thumper and Vera did two circuits over the location from where I took the photographs, they were flying very low. I shall be pleased, nay relieved, to hear of Vera's safe return. Good luck to the aircrew.

Good news Mike - not sure what the airforce equivalent is of the naval expression "fair winds and following seas" ... but wish them all the best for their long flight home.

They have done us proud on the other side of the pond!

Agreed, Tim, the coverage in the UK has been overwhelming. I just hope our own media have caught on. Nice photo from the Daily Mail att.

P.Mansbridge did a trip in our Lanc earlier this summer and featured her on "The National", do you think we can get him to do a follow-up?

Must admit that I have seen very little coverage of her trip in the Canadian media - "out of sight, out of mind" I guess.

Certainly would be great to see a followup by Peter.

(For non-Canadian readers, Peter Mansbridge is the host of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's national evening newscast - and probably the most respected TV personality in this fair land!)

Unfortunately they have found "headwinds and foul weather" - from PPRuNe (26th Sep 2014, 11:16 ):

Many thanks BlackBat, missed it in PPrune. Just sent a photo to Warplane Museum and part of their automated reply follows:-

"Please note that the Lancaster is planning to arrive home at the Museum on Sunday, September 28 around midday.

Admission on Sunday is $15.00 for persons 13 and over and kids 6 - 12 are $10.00. All proceeds to go to the Lancaster Engine Fund."

Looks like we have a day and time.

I can't imagine that the quantities of aviation gasoline required by a Lancaster are readily available at many airfields these days, gasoline being the fuel of choice for relatively small aircraft. Would they have had to make special arrangements for the quantities needed, or do all larger airfields hold those sort of amounts?

I don't know, but this link is to a photo of her on arrival Goose Bay - in the rain.

Two posts later there is one of her sunny cloudless take-off the morning of the 27th, heading for the airshow at Ottawa.

Thanks Blacckbat for the link. Although knarfw apologises for the first of those two photos, it is really atmospheric. I think it's brilliant.

Sad and very frustrating that there was minimal advance notice of her brief visit to Gatineau - I live about 10kms from Gatineau airport and would certainly have gone to welcome her home had I known about it!

Not sure why she dropped in here - there was no airshow here this weekend, the annual Vintage Wings one having been cancelled this year. Given her arrival time here however, had she pressed on yesterday, she would not have been able to reach Hamilton until after dusk, which would have spoiled her triumphant arrival in Hamilton during daylight hours - so her overnight stay in Gatineau certainly makes sense.

Ah well - at least she's home where she belongs!
