Ian i assume from the thread title that you are interested in prisoners of war from the ships you list , a member of my family was RNVR and he was in a German prison camp i found this out from a link on the Forces Reunited web site though it gave me no information regarding the ship that he was from

Ian, If you are still researching HMS Sikh, my Nan tells me that my Grandad was on B gun on Sikh when it was sunk. His name was Jim Nolan, or Ginger. I'm lead to believe that a book was written about the boat with its name changed to HMS Skye, called lower deck by John Davies. If you have any info, please can you pass it on via the thread or email. Thanks, Gregg.

Gregg - I have a POW J. NOLAN Corporal R.M No. EX1870 POW No. 6159 Camp No. 18A.
Quite what / where Camp 18A is / was located I do not know.

Perhaps this is `your' Nolan ??
Do not know re Sikh & B Gun - Marines `mostly' served X & Y Turret.

DAVID ; if you are looking for a POW I can only go by name & if they were German POW.

Hello Ian, I would be very interested in any information you have on the prisoners from the Bedouin. My grandfather Alexander Chalmers will be on those lists.

Regards

Dougie

I don't know if you are interested but if you look on the thread relating to Sikh you will see that I posted some information on there in relation to the fact that a portion of the ships crew took place in a prisoner 'swap' which I believe was one of the only kind during the war. This had nothing to do with the Geneva convention and was an agreement between the Italian and British governments with Saudi acting as a go between. As such many of those returned, including my Grandfather went back to war duties.

My Grandfather, John COOTES, was also captured on Op Agreement when HMS Sikh was sunk. He was held in an Italian pow camp/s until released in a POW swap. Full details on HMS Sikh thread.

There was a Daily Mail article, I may have posted in other threads, I will try and fish out. My Dad's uncle James Wilson Stoker 1st Class, father of Jazz Singer Mari Wilson and musician John Wilson, was taken prisoner. When I was a kid we met, he showed me an Airfix model of the Sikh, I asked him "did you see any action?", he said "yes I saw a bit of action". He apparently told my parents the Italian food was good. He was repatriated in time for D-Day and served on a frigate during D-Day, I mistakenly thought was called Ashanti.

He hunted the Graf Spee, fired at the Bismarck, part escorted Russian convoys, Malta convoys, watched the Ark Royal sink and took part in commando raids, but was extremely modest about it all.

I've seen figures for POW and they seem incorrect according to the DM article from 1942, unless they are including RM prisoners in those figures. I was under the impression that roughly speaking, just under half the crew died and just over half survived.

I saw in other threads that some stokers died. I was under the impression that my uncle served on A/A guns as well, I don't know if that is possible.

The Sikh story is almost unbelievable, like a movie, the ship was involved in transporting royalty, convoy escort, special operations, operations against capital ships, surprise victories against cruisers, commando raids and more, then in Tobruk harbour they managed to attach a tow line to save the Sikh, but shore batteries got it with a lucky shot. If the scriptwriter wrote it, the studio would reject it and ask for a more believable story...
