Default 19th century ranks/ratings

Dear all,

I am interested in buying a medal from a reputable medal dealer concerning a royal navy veteran from the 19th century. Apparently the dealer has his documents as well and lists his rank as Private. Did the Royal Navy have Privates back then ? Could my man perhaps have been a Royal Marine onboard a ship ?

As of yet, I have not approached the dealer - just sending out feelers here at the moment.

Thanks

Andre

I cannot speak for naval ranks.

However, I too had a family member enlisted with the Royal Marines dating back to 1886. His service records obtained from the National Archives lists him as Private upon enlistment, followed by Corporal in 1891.
If you have the name of this veteran, why not check with the National Archives and if listed in their database, buy a copy and check all of his recorded details, postings, ships served on etc. That will eliminate any doubt.
