Good to see your latest pictures Jim, but I'm afraid if she did have a quick paint job before getting to Sunderland it couldn't have been more than a lick and a promise. Your photos showed exactly what I saw for myself when she left Devonport a couple of days before. It was a bit of a shock for some regular local warship-spotters.

Anyway apart from her unkempt appearance, I'm sure her visit would have been well received by her adopted city and I hope a good time was had by all.

Thanks for sharing. Regards...Paul

Where the wrap-a-round rails end - the walking begins

Only just noticed the following feature in Daniel/gibdan's post #1058 (7th attachment), in the Gibraltar Photo Galleries thread.

Twin rails wrap-around the top of the bridge windows on Ocean (L12) and stop abruptly aft of the fwd bridge window on the stbd side. Is this associated with the bridge wing sponson/walkway that goes all the way aft, to the aft facing stbd bridge wing door and the stbd flag locker.

Would it be right to assume that the twin rails are for use by the bridge window cleaners whom by using a) a custom made bogie with rollers and a supporting harness, and b) the rail below the windows as footholds - they fulfill the evolution of cleaning the bridge windows all the way round, from the port aft bridge window(s) to that point on stbd side where the bridge wing sponson starts.

Attachments
1st; viewed from the flight deck looking up towards the bridge - showing the wrap-a-round twin rails above the bridge windows.
2nd; viewed from sea level (river Thames) - showing the wrap-a-round twin rails above the bridge stop above and just aft of the point where the stbd bridge wing sponson starts.

Made a video of the photos and added it to YouTube here
The sound track may sound familiar

A few photos of HMS Ocean leaving her adopted City of Sunderland for the final time before being withdrawn from service.

Great pics. Looks so small compared to the new carrier.

remarkable, and given excellent value for the money. A couple of years ago she was at Greenwich and hosted my Arctic veterans with huge success.
