Default 75th Anniversary of Air Raid on Cowes IOW

Another aniversary this weekend. Remembers the Air Raid on Cowes IOW The Polish warship ORP GNIEZNO will be anchored off Cowes, Isle of Wight. over the weekend to commemorate Polish Destroyer ORP Blyskawica 75 years on. Blyskawica was at Cowes being repaired. Her AA guns helped with defence and her crew assisted ashore. Here she is escorting Queen Mary, she was one of the few ships fast enough to keep up with her!.

The occasion is still remembered with gratitude in Cowes and in the Island generally; in fact, there is a suggestion that the new floating bridge should be named after the Blyskawica - we wait and see !

Well done, I had a message from the RN officer responsible for these things and sent him some rare mementos to give the modern Polish ship on scene.

Having a rare opportunity to send the post in the Forum I would like to
thank for the thread.
I would love provide more details from the Polish side but unfortunately the WNF server ( I have faced many problems before with the access to WNF before and strangely this is ONLY with the WNF page !) has successfully and apparently definitely rejected my computer IP and I can not participate in the forum.
My friends here helped a lot before - thanks once more - but I do not want this situation being repeated any longer for this puts me in a uncomfortable position of an backyard door beggar.
Anyway, I will be checking from time to time if the system is more and permanently friendly.

All the best,

GD

Hey GD .... don't give my friend , you are a valued friend on the Forum and I for one look forward to your inputs.

I think many of us have had troubles with the server over the past 12 months but perseverance prevails ..... keep the faith.

Note: The gremlin doesn't let me in very often so I have to grab it when I can.

When I was in Cowes a couple of years ago there was a nice photograph of ORP Blyskawica in one of the pubs, I think it was the Union Inn down near the Lifeboat Station.

A question about Blyskawica and Grom: as built they mounted seven 4.7" guns, which was the single mount? I assume it was A mount to reduce weight forward, but can someone confirm this? It is difficult to tell from the photos I have seen.

You may be right about her 1937 configuration, certainly X and Y were twin mountings but, by 1941, the seven guns were changed to four twin 4inch turrets at A, B, X and Y.

Pontius:

This photo clearly shows "A" mount to be the single one:

Here is one of her stern in 1937... both mounts there are twin.

i have enlarged the image and zoomed in. Clearly, A is the single turret.

Thank you Scatari. I don't know how I missed that picture when I was looking for information about the Polish destroyers a few years ago.

You are quite welcome Martin - two sets of eyes are sometimes better than just one!
