Having trouble finding the Service Record of JAMES MATTHEW BOLER b.1877 d. 1918 when SS. Treveal was sunk by U-boat Hans Rose. (Royal Naval Reserve - 4004B).
Have all details of census etc up to 1901 and presume he joined after 1901 either in the Merchant or Royal Navy. Searched Nat. Arch.high and low - found nothing. So Gentlemen have we any ideas where to look? With grateful thanks, Steve ![]() |

Hi Steve-best to ring first and ask specifically for the curator and once having got this person-tell him/her what you seek.If by any chance the Records have been moved again- make sure you find out where.the Records are kept now. When I got my fathers records, the records they had were all for ratings from the turn of last century and his number is important.I think you will have to put your request in writing giving as much detail as you have got.
Let me know how you get on. jainso31

Hi Jim,
Just got a letter from F.A.A. Museum. James Matthew Boler was known as plain James Boler. Joined in early 1900's, after 1901 and had 3 service numbers for each 5 year period. First two periods have not survived, but mention in the third period. They have his death in the Admiralty Casualty Register (James MATTHEW Boler) Already have these details. Cost of records £21.00 by airmail, so will send for them. I have spent months and months researching. You, Jim, in the space of a couple of weeks have helped me resolve a mystery. With grateful thanks and I hope I will be able to help someone else (Naval or Non-Naval) Steve ![]() |
