Default French CV: Charles de Gaulle

Going from Don's "HUGE" kits to a small (1:1536 scale) model of France's nuke carrier. The model is 6.7" x 1.65" (F.D.).

Like all my other 530 scratch built models, she is made from sheet balsa of different thickness laminated together. After the glue dries shaping is primarily done with sandpaper. Tiny pcs. of thin wire and cut to shape paperboard are used for masts and radars. The model is sealed with numerous coats of plastic glue; sanded between coats until smooth.

I started her a couple of weeks ago and finished her today; first completed model of 2017. The German CL EMDEN is following (WW 2). DFO

To give a better idea of the "keel laying", so to speak, here is the beginning of VIKRAMADITYA in 2013, and finished alongside KIEV DFO

Thanks, all built from sheet balsa: 3/32", 1/16", 1/32".

Started in 1959 after "discovering" JANE'S!! Hence the scale: they had recently started using it for cruisers on up. I built the KIEV in 1976, shortly after she came out. Slight pause ( until 2013 when I started up again with India's "free" carrier...VIKRAMADITYA.

Somehow, over the decades the connection between eyes, fingers and brain...uhh...decreased BADLY So did the quality of balsa and-thanks to EPA-the paint. DFO

pics: BISMARCK from @ 1970, TIRPITZ from 1966, but radically rebuilt last year in her final camo scheme.

He does well in that scale though, although we are not sure about a Marine that builds ships -- you'd think he'd be all ga-ga over tanks, Warthogs, artillery, missile batteries, but noooooo....
