Yes Keith I am renowned for this. If I hear any glass ringing I will hold the glass to stop it ringing and save a sailor from drowning.

And there is this corollary ... a glass that rings tolls the death of a sailor. Stop the ring and the Devil takes two soldiers in lieu.

Is it still considered lucky to touch the sailor's collar? And to hold it down as he gets his greatcoat on?

I'm sorry Edna, those days when holding a collar down are long gone, it was a useful ruse to start a conversion with a member of the fair sex. I suspect today's equivalent would be "do you mind holding my I Pod"
