Default Tribute to Lt Cdr Eric 'Winkle' Brown by Ivan Berryman

Tribute to Lt Cdr Eric 'Winkle' Brown by Ivan Berryman
Released July 2012

One of the most experienced and respected test pilots in history, Eric 'Winkle' Brown carried out the first landing and take off by a jet aircraft on an aircraft carrier on 3rd December 1945. This was accomplished in the second prototype De Havilland Vampire LZ551/G which had been extensively modified for the sole purpose of carrier operations. Not only was an arrester hook added, but the aircraft featured larger flaps and was fitted with the more powerful Goblin 2 engine. The first take off by a jet from an aircraft carrier is depicted here as Lt Cdr Brown lifts away from the deck of HMS Ocean on that momentous day.

Still going strong at 95, Winkle has just been featured as a Great Briton in the Summer 2014 edition of "This England".

He was also featured yesterday in the Mail on Line, link follows:-

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...lls-story.html

More significantly, a documentary about him is now out on DVD:-

http://www.quantafilms.com/index.php?main_page=page_3

......or just Google "Eric Brown - a pilot's story"

My birthday present arrived a bit late, but worth it!

I now have Winkle's book "Wings of the Weird and Wonderful", an absolute feast. This is an updated and expanded issue of his original 1983 & 1985 books, featuring the 53 most interesting aircraft he flew.

The range is remarkable, the illustrations first-class and the text eminently readable, Winkle manages to combine factual data and observations made at the time with some very human touches and low-key humour.

In the section on the Sea Vampire he also gives a detailed examination and description of the rubber deck experiment. This book really complements "Wings on my sleeve".

ISBN 9 781902 109162, Crecy Publishing 2012 www.crecy.co.uk

Not cheap, but well worth it - thank you, Jane!

My pleasure Jim! And I picked this fragment from another Forum:-

I am told from somebody who saw EMB recently that he received a phone call that went something like this:-

"Captain Brown, Buckingham Palace here - Her Majesty has asked if you could be available to accompany her on a visit to Belsen."

"I'd be glad to, but unfortunately my passport has just expired and I don't think I can get it renewed in time."

"Not a problem sir, just leave that with us and we'll sort it out".

I have just stumbled upon a petition to get him a knighthood. I think its the least he deserves.

Have just learned, very sadly, of his death today.

Regret it won't be Sir Winkle, dammit.

Little man, massive achievements.

Regrettably overlooked in the Honours lists.

His legacy speaks volumes and his achievements will long be remembered.

RIP Eric "Winkle" Brown; your duty done.

Sandy.

Yes, this courageous man never received the honours he so thoroughly deserved - I don't understand why that was. I am now saddened to see that his medals are to be put up for auction - by his family I assume. I can't comment on their reasons for this but I would have thought they could have been offered for sale to say, the Imperial War Museum or Lord Ashcroft so they can be preserved in this country and be seen by the public rather than be auctioned with the risk they may be bought by a foreign buyer and be taken out of the country.

Peter

PS: Have just seen the discussion on this in the Naval Obituaries thread
