Default Dismissed from the service

What has gone wrong into days navy, Captain of a mine sweeper being taken off her command for having an affair with one of her officers, Nuclear submarine Captain being dismissed for groping(or probably more) a female submariner and now 9 submariners being dismissed , again a nuclear submarine-for taking drugs --what sort of a light does this throw to the British public---cannot remember any drug taking while I was serving ---only one case
of a Somalie CPO smuggling gold back to the Gulf, nothing on drugs though, and as for the "No touching " orders --what did the navy expect putting females into submarines among a lot of ha-iry ar-sed seamen who had`nt seen the light of day for weeks on end---which idiot runs our navy and gives orders such as these----its not so long ago that they were discharging navy personnel for being "gay", now they are allowed in (" no touching on my watch Dear - see you later in the tiller flat")---what was that old approach by the old 3 badgers to the youngest crew members " Have you seen the Golden rivet"---did anyone fall for that one--I wonder!!!!

There is another way to look at this. Rules!. Get caught breaking them and you get punished. End of story!. (until the MEDIA make gets ahold of it ) and dare I say the people on here?.

Ceylon 220,

A person serving in to-day's Royal Navy might well ask in reply: "What was wrong with your navy?"

What you did or did not see or hear about rather depends on when you served, where and in what rank/rate.

Best Wishes,

GK

Point taken ----breaking the rules you pay for it as we always did but drug taking is something I never heard of in my 20 + years in the service and as for the medias out put in these cases ,where else do we hear about as I`m sure the Navy does`nt want it spread about and yes there were the odd balls if that`s what you call them serving in all rates of the service in the 50s and 70s and not only in the navy.

Hi All

We may not have snorted the stuff but, if we had been breathalysed after lunch pre 1970 few of us, if any would have passed. As has already been said, rules is rules.

But is that because it never happened or because the RN in those days didn't have the procedures in place to catch them, procedures such as random and targeted drug screening, sniffer dogs, annual drug education lectures etc etc?

Personal in my time the only drugs I saw being taken was Nicotine, alchahol and Codeine. I would think that if the RN didn't have Drug testing in place, it was simply because there was no Drug problem.

Of course not, but I certainly never ever saw the sights aboard ship, that I see in the streets these days.

I remember in 1992 going alongside Haifa after a 6 month Far East deployment and there being a drugs bust on board with the S.I.B knowing who they were targeting (this being before the days of random drugs tests.) From memory it ended up with one Junior Rate being charged with supplying and a small handful of others with using, so this latest event is nothing new.

Needless to say when we reached Plymouth Sound a couple of weeks later a sniffer dog was brought out to have a good search of the ship.

Hi All

The only searches I recall were by HM Customs relieving you of your leave pay or presents bought for family in lieu of duty.

Is this such a new thing ?? My fading memory cells seem to recall there being a drug problem on HMS Plymouth here in Devonport back in the days before or perhaps just after the Falklands [80's early 90's].

It all seems to have kicked off with the Vietnam War but has really escalated in recent years . Perhaps if it become more rewarding for farmers in Afghanistan and the like to grow food rather that Poppies the supply would dwindle thus hypothetically driving the drug barons out of business or restricting their growth.

I know , pigs might fly but we can only hope.

Hi All

Why does government not buy up the entire Afghan poppy crop, turn it into diamorphine to provide the medical profession with ample pain killers. Thus providing the farmers with a living, and taking a lot of heroin off the market.
