Default In Memory of Wilfred John Bond 1911-1985 Marine Gunner and Commando

Hi my name is Duncan Bond and I am the first Cousin once removed of Royal Marine Wilfred Bond.

Wilfred was born 1911 in Tibenham Norfolk, enlisted as a rating aged 18 at Chatham in 1930 and had a decade on ships before, on returning from the Battle of the River Plate on HMS Ajax, left to join Royal Marine Brigade and then volunteered for "A"/40 Royal Marine Commandos assaulting beaches at Dieppe, Sicily, Porto San Venere Italy and Termoli Italy. After suffering what was then called "shell shock" for 5 months he Joined Holding Operational Commando rising to CSM until the end of the war. He then took part in the occupation forces at Trieste, before ending his 22 years at RM Deal barracks Kent in 1952. He died in Scotland in 1985.

His ships are as follows
HMS Valiant (Q E Class Battleship) Aug'31-Jan'32 - Invergordon
HMS Ceres (C Class Cruiser) May'32-Nov'33
HMS Iron Duke (Gunnery Training) May'35
HMS Vindictive (Heavy Cruiser) Jul'35
HMS Dragon (D Class Cruiser)Aug'35-May'37
HMS Diomede (D class Light Cruiser) Jun37' Oct'37
HMS Ajax (22) Jan'38-Feb'40 Battle of River Plate -wounded right leg

I have located his military records but I do not have any photos of Wilfred or any information after leaving the RM in 1952 after he moved to Kilwinning Scotland. I also have some gaps in knowledge about ship locations.

HMS Dragon Aug 1935 to March 1936 (Port calls) especially Nov 1935
HMS AJAX Jan-November 1938 (Port calls) especially Aug 1938.

Any help would be welcome, I am trying to put together a comprehensive dossier for the Town of Ajax Canada where Wilfred is commemorated. I am more than happy to help anyone with their own quests.

Have a look here for Dragon during the period required. Might be others on the thread but short of time to look - use the Search this thread facility.

Thank you. had a look though all 19 pages found nothing new for HMS Dragon and HMS Ajax but did find HMS Ceres Spring Cruise of 1933 which Wilfred would have been on which I had no information about.
