hello

I have recently discovered that my Great Uncle - James Cox - was a crew member on the HMS Swordfish S Class Submarine that sank on or about the 7th of November 1940 after striking a mine, I would appreciate any information about him, or about the Submarine itself

Many thanks

You may already have this info but just in case..... CWGC records show a Leading Seaman James Frank Cox died in HMS Swordfish 16/11/1940. His service no. was P/J60278 and he was the son of Frank and Georgina Cox. His wife was Annie Laura Louisa Cox of Dorset. He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

HMS Swordfish left Portsmouth on 7/11/1940 and was never heard from again. When she did not 'report in' on the 15/16 November 1940 as she should have done, it was assumed she had been sunk by a German Destroyer off Brest. In 1983 her wreck was found by a local diver just south of St Catherines point on the Isle of Wight. It is probable that she stuck a mine soon after leaving Portsmouth on 7/11/1940 and sank with the loss of all hands. Final resting place is 50deg 24min 30secs N 01deg 21min 00secs W. Some artifacts from the wreck have been recovered and are/were displayed in the Bembridge Museum on the IOW. Specifications for S type boats are easily found on the web.

Hope this helps....
