:)
Hello
I am very new to this game so please bear with me as I only took possesion of my first PC of my own a few days ago and although I used a computer at work....... message boards were a no no !!
Having recently taken early retirement from the John Lewis Partnership, I decided to relocate back to my "roots" in Portsmouth. Both my parents were born here along with and both sets of grandparents eventually found their way here (obviously !)
My Grandfather Charles Stephen Grigson ended his Royal Naval career as a Lt (E) and I believe he served on HMS Victory for a while during the mid to late 1920's. I am painfully going through the Navy Lists for more information in order to get his complete service records from the National Archives.
My other Grandfather, Dalson Jory Stanton started his Navy career as an apprentice at the dockyard in Woolwich SE London round about 1900. I believe he ended up as an articifer but can find no record of him so far in the Navy Lists...... anyone now of another way to trace him ?
Am I the only one out there who finds family history totally addictive, time consuming and..... FUN ?

Viv says sorry.... I told you I was new to this sort of thing.....

I forgot to mention that although I am tracing my ancestors I would also like to learn more about life in the Royal Navy during the early part of the last century including WW1 in order that I can build up an historical picture of the life of my grandparents.

Thanks

Viv, you're very welcome here! I hope you learn a lot about not only the RN but other navies as well.

Don't be daunted by the new computer or forums. We are very nice here and mistakes will not earn you time in the Brig!

Hi Viv and welcome!

Did some delving for you:

Dalson Jory Stanton born 1884 (Birth recorded in March in Bodmin reference: 1884 JFM Bodmin Vol 5c)

in 1891 He was living with his parents in Millbrook, Cornwall

1n 1901 he was living with his parents in Plumstead, London

He married in 1908 in London

I have been researching my family tree for over ten years, and have access to all the paid sites, so if I can assist you any further, let me know.

Morning Cissy or whatever it is where you are !
Thank you for your delving and it proves that my research techniques are working as you have found the same info that I have now discovered which led me back to 1809 and my Gt Gt Grandfather in St Germans Cornwall. It's good to have family names and surnames which are slightly less "common" as it makes life soooooo much easier !
I have only been doing this research for a little less than six months but already I have found people to be extremely helpful and friendly. Mind you it is also extremely addictive as it now just past 10am and I am sitting here doing this instead of doing the housework but there again this is my first pc so I am a little bit like a kid with a new toy ....... blow the housework !
Today my mission is to "boldly go" ....... no wrong mission.... is to seek out some decent books about life in the RN in the early part of the last century.

Thanks :)

Hi Viv... yup its morning here, as I only live along the M3 from you.

Hmmm..the 'twilight zone' of PC's and family history. Not to mention the History of the Royal Navy eh?

If you need any help, let me know. I am probably teaching you to suck eggs and all that, but have you visited the National Archives site for Naval records etc?

Yes I am still here Cissy and I am still not doing my housework either !!

Funny you should mention The National Archives as I was going to try that sometime as I noticed on other peoples threads (yes I am getting to know these terms !) that this avenue can be quite useful to go down .....

I will let you know what happens

Hey Viv...

this is the link: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Go to Documents online and put in your relatives name, Surname first then a comma then the first name (better search results) Once found, you can download the record immediately for £3.50

For the record, it's now 11am...me and the kids are still in PJ's... But I will have to rouse meself soon as the other half will be turning up!Then we will rush round and make it look like we have been up and busy for hours! :D

Viv

Hello and welcome to the forum. I always like to see women and youngsters taking an interest in military topics. Don't be afraid to post because of inexperience. There's none of us that know everything and so we are all still learning.

Regards...john

Hi Viv. Your other grandfather was an ARTIFICER not an articifer. Artificers were the engineering backbone of the RN until quite recently. I was one joining in 1949 and finishing a 4 year apprenticeship in 1953 when I joined the Fleet for the first time. We were using computers in the 1950s long before they were used in civilian life. Artificers were known as 'Tiffies' in the RN and there is now a website for the Fisgard Association, the ex-Tiffs old boys club. Google "Fisgard" to get there. jonti

Thanks Jonti for that info

I will now remember to quote articifer as ARTICIFER !:(
I will certainly try the website you mentioned.... it appears there is a website for every thing nowadays!

Hi Viv. I had a look at the Fisgard website and under the section"Class photos" there is material going back to 1905, which may be of interest to you regarding your grandfather. I read your posts on the other thread and 'artificer' passes with flying colours. Well done. Surely housework was never as exciting as this! jonti
