The usual entry is for selected trainees go to HMAS Creswell. It is situated at Jervis Bay which is Commonwealth territory. They must possess Year 12 with passes in four subjects including English and maths.

These students are non-graduate on entry. They enter the college as Midshipman, while trainees with significant experience or more university education enter as Sub Lieutenants, Lieutenants and Chaplains. After completing training at the college officers proceed to other establishments for primary qualification training. Locations include HMAS Watson, for Junior Warfare Officers (formerly known as Seamen Officers), and HMAS Cerberus, for Weapons Electrical and Marine Engineers and Supply officers.

Follow initial Officer training they then undertake a six-month consolidation period in the fleet and commence at Australian Defence Forces Academy (ADFA) situated in Canberra at the beginning of their second year in the Navy. Upon graduation after a six month course, they are promoted to Sub Lieutenant.

Young men who are accepted for pilot training, proceed straight to ADFA. As do those cadets with a degree.

For those who pursue tertiary qualifications as part of their officer training, the Navy pays a salary during study - ranging from $19,204 in the first year to $30,652 in the final year of study. Cadets who go straight to officer training earn $28,805 to $30,652 per year while training. At the end of their training, qualified officers can earn from $51,000 upwards depending on rank, experience and qualifications, with the higher ranking officers earning approximately $73,000.

Good post Herk. It will be interesting to see how this compares with the Royal Navy today.
One of the members should know the pay rates.

One thing that needs to be said here on these rates is that it doesn't include war zone allowances.
Heading off for a stint in the gulf area in an Australian Frigate or destroyer means riches beyond ones wildest dreams.
There is a queue here in all the forces to be sent over seas. Be it Iraq, Afghanistan or Timor.

Yes, you are quite right. There are loads of various allowances.

I deliberately left them out for the sake of clarity.
