Just thought I would post some recently added photos of the Canadian City Class frigates. Of course there are more photos on the main site, but here is just a taster.

With these 12 frigates being divided between the West and East coasts, do they remain on the one side for their entire careers, or do they swap around.
This question also applies to all the other Canadian warships.
Must create some big strategic issues.

Now that is a good question, I know back in the 50s/60/70s/and 80s they swapped bases, my father started from the west coast , then to Halifax, laid the keel for me lol to be launched there.

Unless something drastic happens, I think the ships will remain in their present home ports. The ships in the 60's and 70's were re-located sometimes. Margaree, Assiniboine and Ottawa were a west coast squadron until converted to DDHs, then they were based in Hfx. Columbia, Algonquin (224) and Crescent were sent west in 67, the later two to be used for training at Royal Roads if I recall. I know Annapolis, Huron and Algonquin (283) started out in Hfx. Pretty sure Saskatchewan and Chaudiere were east coasters as well at one time. Might be more (peace time era) that I can't recall.

As at 2011 the disposition of the 32 Canadian warships appears to be so.

MARPAC West coast based Esquimalt BC
DD-1, FF-5, Supply-1, SS-1, Coastal-6.

MARLANT East coast based Halifax NS
DD-2, FF-7, Supply-1, Subs-3, Coastal-6.

This includes all ships in refit.

A slight bias to the MARLANT Halifax based ships.

I know it's probably been said before but I find the look of these frigates most unsatisfying. An extra deck in the forward superstructure would make a far more pleasing looking ship. I know that the look of a ship has nothing to do with it's capabilities but I do like a nice looking ship.

The Restigouche Class and MacKenzie Class started their service on the east coast. It was the DDH and Improved Restigouche (IRE) modernizations that resulted in the fleet mix most remember where the six St Laurent DDHs stayed east, the four Mackenzies were transferred west and then so were the four IREs in the late 60s.

Columbia and Chaudiere were also sent west sometime around the late 60s also, paid off and used as harbour training ships in Esquimalt.

Things were pretty steady state until Gatineau switched with Huron in '87 and Terra Nova switched with Annapolis in '89. This was followed by Provider switching with Protecteur around '93. Algonquin also came out west after her TRUMP refit in '94.

NB: Dates are approximate since I'm just going with my fading memory here.
