View Full Version : Marines Section?

I know, I know....The Marines consider the Navy the sea arm of the Marines and the Navy takes the opposite tack. I recall being witness to a brawl originating on same in the Woolworths near the old Navy Yard on the East River in New York. Contention regarding who's God is bigger aside, I believe a section to Marines is applicable here, the service being such a large part of everybodies naval history. Any thoughts regarding this?

As I write this four thousand South Korean Marines are setting up positions on the island recently shelled by the North Koreans. If, or more likely when, the conflict develops (China is getting involved) the South Korean Marines will be bearing the brunt of the action. Regards

Hank,

I read your post above just after you had submitted it and thought that a Mod may have been along and offered a response.

In the meanwhile why not test the water and start a THREAD for/on/about the Royal Marines instead of a full blown Forum. If it goes well it could always be reconstituted as a Forum within the RNSF section of the WNSF.

Thanks for the input, Harry. I posted regarding The Royal Marines in the Crimean dustup on the RN ships section. If it's my bad, then I suppose I'll be informed. Regards

I think a Marines section would be nice. The selection of US marines for use in pre-war China was because they were intimately connected with the USN. I think it is a great loss to the USN that major ships no longer have an embarked Marine detachment.

Hi Hank,

Apologies for mot respomding erlier to your plea for a marines section.

The problem here is that we have a constant stream of requests for new sections, and if we reacted favourably to every one, the structure of the forum would soon disintegrate. Tht other problem is that in most cases, there is an inevitable overlap of topics which makes it difficult to know where the boundaries are. The Marines is such a case due to their inextricable link with the RN, and campaigns etc.

We have the same problem with 'Submarimes' and in the end decided not to split into a dedicated section, rather, just ensure the thread structure was sound and consistent.

My suggestion, for the time being, as has been done with submarines, is to firstly ensure a common thread title structure. For example,

HM Royal Marines: Artillery in the Crimean War
HM Royal Marines: Gallipoli Landings
HM Royal Marines: Gun Crews at Jutland

... etc., etc.,

The advantage of this is primarily twofold. Firstly it will help the search engine find topics relating to the Marines for anyone researching them. Secondly, it will make any future move to set up a dedicated section that much easier. In addition, it provides a recognisable common format which helps with overall appearance and structure of the Forum.

I would suggest that the Marine threads primarily be located in the 'Everything Else' section for now, as some of the purely land based campaigns may not sit entirely correctly in the 'RN Ships & Crews' section. Any threads concerned with a particular campaign may also suit entry in the 'Battles & Events' section. But then on the other hand, their role at Jutland may indeed be relevant in the RN Ships section. So there is always the best choice to be made, dependent upon the nature of the topic.

Hope that helps. If I can be of any further assistance with this, please do not hesitate to PM me.

Cheers

Addition: The above would be true for other marine forces, just requiring a change to the thread title - e.g. US Marines: topic topic

Bearing in mind this is the World Naval Ship's Forum, I would hope that space could be found for other countries' marines too - not just our Royal bootnecks (much as we love them).

Hi Egypt ... I have mentioned that in the 'Addition' at the foot of my post.

I stand corrected and I look forward to reading some interesting threads on these topics. BZ.
