This is another Photograph found amongst my Grandfather's possessions.
Scribbled on the back is 1896 Defiance. On checking my Great Grandfather's service record (Joseph Richard Bulley 97276) He did serve on Defiance many times. The service record is pretty hard to make out, but in the census of 1891 he is shown as Petty Officer First Class.

He joined the Navy in 1878 and served until 1910, then again 1915 to what looks like 1920.

The man to the right of the gentleman in the top hat looks more than likely to be Joseph... but I could be wrong (again!)

*Just realised that I may have posted this in the wrong place?*

What a great picture.
Here is quite a bit about the Mine/torpedo school HMS Defiance.

Bob,
Thankyou for that! Very interesting site. On delving into my photo's a bit more, I am convinced that the sailor to the right of the man in the top hat is indeed my great grandfather, Joseph Richard Bulley, Born 1860 (97276)

Thankyou for 'cleaning' the picture up... its very clear now.
