Hello everybody, I found this photo in my late fathers album along with his other WW11. photos. Unusual with a mix of RN and Army or perhaps Marines ?
Unfortunately there is no information of where or when it was taken. The sailors cap tally just shows the wartime HMS. Any info would be appreciated. thanks Ken.

Can anything be made out on that notice-board at the right-hand edge if it is magnified?

Unfortunately not, I have enlarged the photo in stages on the computer until it pixelates, but nothing on there. Thanks anyway. Ken.

I would say for starters that there is no insignia on any of the soldiers battle dress. At the advent of the 1937 pattern BD over the Field Service Dress prior to 1940, it was deemed that apart from a cap badge there would be no distinguishing insigna for security reasons. Therefore I would say the photo is pre 1940.

Silly idea, but could the persons other than Naval Ratings be Royal Air force and the photo was taken at a Royal Naval Airstation.

The only branch badges visible on the men dressed as seamen are two signalmen and one telegraphist. The horizontal wires to the right and left (apart from the power or telephone cables) look like aerials and there is what looks like an aerial mast in the background too.
The two army officers are from different regiments - Joint force shore base, I wonder if it was an Army/Navy "Y" branch training or operational establishment.
"Y" branch being forerunners of the Electronic warfare specialists.

Many thanks for your interest and observations. Some interesting ideas, especially the pre 1940 possibility as my father was RNVR (medical branch) and would go away for annual training prior to the war, although I cannot find him in the photo. I note that there are RNVR officers present. However the "HMS" only on the sailors cap tally would suggest that it is wartime. Would welcome any further comments.

Ken.
