Not sure if my last message made it... Like Stan J, my Grandfather George James Keam 40 was killed in the sinking of the Cressy, (Hogue and Aboukir) He came from Whitstable. I am trying to find information for my children and grandchildren (I now live in Australia). I would particularly like the ship number of the Cressy, I have found it very hard to find this information. I also feel there should be dedication plaque to all these men who died. The Kings Lynn one is lovely. My Grandfathers name is on the Chatham memorial in Kent but not event specific. It was a tragic incident. My mother at age 12 was devastated. I would also like to know if widows at this time were granted a pension of any kind as I can't imagine how my Grandmother managed.

When you say 'Ships Number' do you mean Pennant Number ? As, I'm sure, they hadn't been allocated to major warships in 1914.

How indeed did they manage then? It's not exactly easy now.

My heart goes out to the numberless men transported in the 19th century, usually leaving a wife and young family destitute.

And there will be countless examples of the same thing happening to men who died on active service.

And welcome vekeam to the forum. Nice to have another on-board from the top of the world!

Herakles, Commodore. I think you were referring to my request whether widows got pensions. I have since found out from an elderly family member that she did get a pension and now have an actual copy of my Grandmothers final papers where they paid her out his wages owed and other expenses, something exceeding 5 pounds sterling. Mind you... a year later. Apparently she was also given an 'alms house'. I think that was what it was called - group of houses set aside for this sort of thing. My elder sister said she wasn't well off but at the same time didn't go without. She had three daughters to bring up, the eldest 12. Thanks for your welcome and prompt reply. I now want to get the book "Three Before Breakfast" by Alan Coles.. should make interesting reading.

To Tonclass, moderator. Not at all sure that I am doing this replying correctly but what the heck... I am not sure whether the ship number is a pennant number. I think I was looking for crew lists and found that the ship name was not enough, they asked for a ship number. thanks for your prompt reply.

RikLet me try again.... I had two replies, the second one had a reply button, yours did not!!! I think I was searching for crew lists and the ship's name wasn't enough, they asked for a ship number. You could of course be correct. thanks for your prompt reply... vekeam
