View Full Version : Monitor Screen Size

I'd like to start a quick poll if I may. It's all to do with the posting of photo's that, for some people seem fine, but for others, like me, are too small. It's all to to with the size of your monitor screen. I myself have a 19" monitor and anything posted less than '1280 pixels wide' are tiny (postage stamps) as I've already mentioned to Sailor before.... Detail cannot be made out and this can be really frustrating when using this site for reference purposes.
Would all those that post pix on this thread take 30 seconds to post their name & screen size so that, maybe, we can come up with a standard that suits all of us.
Many thanks in advance
Rik
I'll start the ball rolling with 19 inches (Oooh err Missus !!)

An interesting topic this Rik, it has always intrigued me as to why some pictures are Gigantic and others so small.
Perhaps we can use this picture as an example between you and I.
Before I post a picture I usually make sure it is approximately my screen size, in this case 18".
The picture I am putting up fills my screen from top to bottom but not quite to the width.
I should be interested to hear from others how it appears on their screens and, as you have already suggested let us know their screen size.
PS. The pic is displayed with the screen maximised!
"GOOD TOPIC"

Your photo is half the height and two thirds the width of my monitor Bob. It's set up for a resolution of 1280 x 1024.

Hello peeps
Not wishing to complicate things but, I've got a 17" digital screen. I've just changed from AOL to Virgin Media. With AOL the large pics were too big for the screen but with Virgin they automatically down or up-size to fit. Is this anything to do with this or not? I find the same with pics on Servicepals, oh am I allowed to mention that site?

It stands a good chance Alan as I have always had AOL and don't know any better!

When you are about Rik have a look at these:-
The first two pics are captured from Internet Explorer.
The second two pics are also captured from Internet Explorer but they are the ones I posted on AOL if that makes sense.

Rik, sorry to be a pest but let me know what difference if any, there is between pic A and pic B.
I will be back in just over an hour.
Cheers, Bob.

In both cases the pix on the right are larger than the pix on the left Bob.
If you open the pix and right click on each one it will give you the dimensions in pixels.

Alan, Windows has a setting that automatically re-sizes photo's to fit the screen. Nothing to do with your Service Provider.

Cheers Rik, I'm no expert in these computer fings.

Hi all - I have a 21 inch monitor. I do strongly feel that the bigger the picture the better...

If using Internet Explorer 7:
In Internet Explorer (it is what you are using to access this page), go to Tools-->Internet Options. Select the Advanced Tab. Go to the Multimedia Section and uncheck Enable Automatic Image Resizing
HI RIK,
there is one thing ,i have found out,
is that on a certain site ,you can click on a pic ,open properties...and it reads
.. 209...157 pixels
click on again ,properties
.. 800...600 pixels
click on again properties
..2563..1922 pixels.
each time you click on the picture it becomes large, so large it go,s off the monitor
so whats the best size to save ? ,mr,s in the next room.

CYLLA,
SHIPSPOTTING.COM came to the conclusion that anything less than '1024' pixels-wide is a waste of time to most users. Their site won't accept anything less and get a warning from the moderators if they do post small !! The standard of monitor has increased so much in the last couple of years that anything posted less is pointless (from an enthusiasts point of view !!) There are occassions where the only pic available is a small one. This can't be helped, but where one can dictate the size of the pic, then it's only fair that, if you wish to show off the photo, they post it at a size that we can all appreciate.
Maybe KC can set a standard size???
Another site suffering from the same problem is SHIPNOSTALGIA.COM, although to their credit, they've increased their size from 800 pixels to 900 pixels wide.
Personally, I'd be happy to go along with 'Shipspotting' and agree a standard size of '1024' width.
Would other members agree or disagree ?
Rgds

PS. CYLLA, It sounds like you've got the Microsoft Autosizing switched on. Foillow the instructions posted earlier (above) and switch it off.
There's nothing wrong with having a pic TOO large for your screen. You can alway reduce it to a size that suites you, without losing important data. Enlarging a SMALL pic though loses just about every detail going.....
The only problem with some pictures is that when they are made larger the quality gets poorer. When the original pixels are less in particular. I right click on a lot of pictures and make them smaller or larger depending on the quality.
