Back in the late 1980's a similar screwup happened during the construction of the first Australian built FFG-7 class (now HMAS Melbourne) when her keel had to be scrapped not once, but twice!

The RAN is calling these new Hobart class destroyers, destroyers.
The Spanish Alvaro De Bazan class frigates upon which they are based are called frigates.
So, who determines the nomenclature, just goes to prove that a frigate or destroyer can equally be a destroyer or frigate.
Or both obviously.

There has always been an ambiguous overlap between larger frigates and destroyers in exactly the same way as there has always existed a similar ambiguity between larger destroyers and cruisers.

Often I find that frigates tend to be anti-submarine or occasionally anti-aircraft whereas destroyers usually have more of a multi-role capability but again that is just as open to different interpretations as using size!
