Hi everyone.
At present I am working on my family history. On the 1881 census my ancester (William Henry Adey 1863) was down as being on the 'Invincible'
ship. He was c17 years. Does anyone know any information about this ship.
Hoping someone can help or advise

This particular HMS Invincible was an Audacious class ironclad, completed in 1870, and powered by both steam and sail. She was renamed Erebus in 1904 and Fisgard 11 in 1906. In Sept 1914 she sank in a storm off Portland Bill with the loss of 21 lives.

For a brief summary of her career and statistics have a look at this site:

Hope this helps.......John

Thanks John for your reply - very interesting. Would I be able to get a list of the lads lost in 1914? Or even about my William's career.

Thanks John for information. Unfortunately my name doesn't come on the list. Wasn't too sure whether I had replied to you.

Hi Helkar

I think that Rootsweb have lists of ships in ports for the various census'. They list all the crew who were shown as 'on board'. So you can also trcak your relatives career that way, as it gives rank etc.

Excellent pic Bob!

Hi

Like you my ancestor James Hornbuckle was on the Invincible in the 1881 census and there is not trace of him after that date I am trying to find out if he was killed in action. He was a Royal Marine Bombadier.

Hello Jill, welcome to the forum.

Your relative's name does not appear on the Admiralty casualty list to end of 1921.

Hi there - Did you find the information you needed regarding your relative? Are you using Ancestry.co.uk to track your family tree, the information stored on their web-site is improving by the day. I too am trying to trace a distant relative in the 1881 census without much success, and hope this Naval web-site can come up with the answers. Good Luck - regards Linda Walton
