The Magpie in WW1 was a gunboat. Launched in 1889, it became a boom defence vessel in 1902, then a depot ship in October 1915. It remained a depot ship until being sold in 1921, according to my sources.

There is supposed to be a photo (from 1898) on this page:

http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/r_n_gunboats.htm

but it is not showing up. I'll look into that and try to get it back up.

I fixed the photo. It's about half way down the page. Searching (Ctrl-f) for magpie will find it too, but there is also an earlier one on the same page.

A Depot Ship is a vessel which acts as the support / supply ship for smaller ships, usually submarines or torpedo boats.

Here is a page with photos http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/depot_ships.htm

A boom defence vessel maintains a boom defence - which is a bar or chain, or netting stretched across a piece of water to obstruct ships.
