Gents,

Was fortunate enough a couple of days ago to attend the launch (aboard HMAS Sydney @ Garden Island Naval Base, Sydney) of a new book about HMAS Perth and her gallant crew during WWII.

Entitled ‘Cruiser’ (by Mike Carlton - at almost 700 pages), it appears very well researched and was supported by both the RAN and HMAS Perth Association during it’s writing; it promises to be a very interesting and informative read.

Anyway, below is a photo from the event showing four of Perth’s crew, two of whom were onboard at time of her sinking near Sunda Strait – and ended up POW’s - and two that had been fortunate enough to disembark in Australia, after Perth returned from the Med, prior to her leaving for Indonesia in 1942.

The photo shows the four vets, author Mike Carlton and, I believe, the Captain of HMAS Sydney.

Excellent, thanks, Kevin. Was not aware of this coming out but I'll have to invest. It'll be a nice companion for Spurling's Cruel Conflict, Lasslett's War Diaries and Ray Parkin's trilogy already on my shelves.

I read an extract in the Fairfax papers at the weekend - it appears to be very well done. Looking forward to getting it.

Picked up a copy today from Big W (large Australian chain store Boots or Kmart I guess) for $29.95. Was almost beside myself when I saw it as I'd hoped one of the big chains would pick it up.

That's certainly the 'right price', as the bigger bookshops want $55 for it! Hope you enjoy!!
