Isn't the internet wonderful.. I have only just joined the "Super Information Highway" and I am now officially a silver surfer and I love this site !
Both my grandparents were in The Royal Navy and I am looking to build an historical picture of their lives in the early 1920's including WW1 for my family history research. It is no good just tracing your ancestors you need to know what life was like for them way back when.
My grandfather was a Lt(E) on HMS Victory in the mid 1920's, what would would he have been doing then ?
My other grandfather started in the naval dockyard in Geenwich and eventually, I believe, became an articifer.... excuse my ignorance but what does an articifer actually do ?
I am looking forward to hearing from you "guys" with any information about life in the Royal Navy.
Thanks

Good to see you Viv. Ask if there is anything we can help with. Maybe an avatar for your persona or help with the forum software.
By the way, we aren't guys here. Us British are called 'chaps'. Some of us are called 'damn fine chaps'.
BB-60 is the only guy here.

Hi "damn fine chap"
Okay so I am new to this game but what is "an avatar to my persona"? Is it painful... can I take tablets for it... or is surgery my only answer ?;)

Viv (ooh okay then .. a dizzy dame!)

Viv, an avatar is the picture that appears at the top left of all your posts,

And a signature is a picture that follows your post.

Do you want help creating these?

It is painless.

OK Viv. Here we go.

You need two pics for the avatar and siggie. They can be your choice or I'm sure we can find something for you.

Have a look around to see if you have any pics you would like to use. Have a look at what others have done. This is the first step. The only important thing is that they must be low resolution pics. In other words, pics that take up very little drive space. Something of the order of 100 bytes or less. The two I have attached here as examples are 12 and 2 bytes. Typically any pics you see at various net sites are of very low resolution.

Try to ensure that a pic you choose is not covered by copyright.

Do that now, then get back here. If you need pics, say so.

Well done Herk.
I think old Viv was a bit worried that an avatar for his persona was a type of enema.

There's more than one type of enema? Wow!

Ta....

I will get to that in the morning when my little grey cells are working to their fullest extent..
I have a particular favourite,The Fighting Temeraire (is that how you spell it ?), so I will try to find a suitable thumbnail and get back to you.

Thank you and goodnight ...

Welcome Viv, from another new 'un! Don't worry about the enema.. after all when you get to their age it helps to pass the time!

OK Viv. I must say that the Temeraire is one of my favourites too. That painting really is evocative, isn't it!

Sure is... have managed to find a fairly decent thumbnail which is good.Still looking for another thumbnail.
Tell me what is the difference between an avatar and the other one ? Presume one is on the top of viv1949 and the other is on the bottom... you see nothing gets passed me !

The top one would be the avatar picture, and the bottom one would be the signature pic. And in light of Astral's rant :) earlier today one could have a profile pic on the profile page too!

I chose an avatar to give some indication about myself, being Australian. You could for instance place a pic of yourself there.

I chose a pic of the Aussie submarine AE2 as my signature to keep reminding me and everyone else of her extraordinary performance in the Dardanelles in 1915.

I hope this helps when you come to planning what you will choose for yourself.

Oh, one other thing. Your choice is not cast in concrete. You can change these whenever you want to.

Look everyone..... I am now avatar and signature enabled and I did all by myself !!!
Took me a while of figuring out how to do it as I am still finding my way around computer systems etc...

viv1949
11-02-2008, 21:52
Yes Cissy the housework is done although I did it in stages (1) I must get this done (2) I really must get this done (3) I'll do it tomorrow (4) I did !

Do not accuse me of being sexist but..... do you guys grasp the concept of housework ! :p

Erm ... ... housework? Do you mean fixing everything around the place?

That's a great picture. I have a copy hanging on a wall. Such a sad ending for a mighty ship.

My dear viv,you ask what is an Artificer ( as a ex. Artificer & a modest person ) he is a valuable member of a ship,s crew. he keeps the ship moving & active, be it engines, navigating instruments, guns, aircraft or any other trade, there is one. In other words he is a tradesman. regards Doug.Birch
