I researched my grandfather's navy record (Ernest Thoroughgood) some time ago as you have suggested through national archives before I found the world naval ships forum website. I did manage to get his record albeit very faint, but it only went up to the year that it was transferred onto card. I have been looking at some of the ships that he was on at some point and on HMS Kent managed to find him listed as a gunner (the only one for that time) which I found surprising. He was born in 1900 so the chances of finding anyone that knew him is very slim now. Little was known about him as he died when my father had just turned 15 in 1942. He was a warrant officer and someone kindly sent me the obituary she found recently in her grandmother's old suitcase. The pieces of the jigsaw are coming together nicely. I have just joined the forum at HMS Dolphin as I know Ernest was on submarines for some time and it lists him there on the service record. Once you get the research bug it really gets you.
kind regards

Christina

I looked on the London Gazettes and found just one entry for your grandfather (see below). You mentioned his service records stopped when they were transferred to cards - those records aren't available yet from the NA (post 1928) and so neither will his records as a Warrant Officer
