USING THE SEARCH FACILITY
GUIDANCE & TIPS
All members are urged to use the Forum search facility before submitting a new thread. The information you are seeking is quite possibly already contained within the Forum, and in order to keep everything together and avoid duplication, it is preferable that you add your enquiry to an existing thread on the topic.
The search facility allows you to search the whole Forum, or selected parts of it. The advanced facility enables you to refine your search in a number of ways.
At the top of all of the Forum pages, is a horizontal menu bar with a filled blue background, denoted (1), in screenshot 1 below. By clicking on “Search” in the menu bar, a drop down menu will be revealed titled “Search Forum”. To search, type a key word, or words, such as the name of a ship, in the white horizontal box to the left of the “Go” button. With the default radio button “Show Threads” illuminated, all the threads on the Forum containing your keyword(s) will be displayed upon clicking on the “Go” button. If you click the “Show Posts” radio button, all the individual posts containing your keyword(s) will be displayed upon clicking the “Go Button”.
NOTE 1
The Forum is set up not to recognise any keywords with less than three characters. This is to prevent your search yielding an unmanageable number of results that may take an excessive time to process.
NOTE 2
It is recommended that in the first instance, you keep the number of keywords to a minimum. A single word is best to start with; you can then refine the search afterwards.
NOTE 3
The search facility is not case sensitive, so you may search either ‘Submarine’ or ‘submarine’ for the same results.
NOTE 4
The search facility does not combine searching for singular and plural words; i.e., A search for ‘submarine’ will not include ‘submarines’. You will have to search ;submarines’ separately.

The Advanced Search option is extremely useful, particularly if you want to find threads where the keyword(s) only appear in the thread title, or if you wish to search for threads or posts submitted by a particular member, for example. There are also a number of other options to filter your search. To access the advance search facility, click on the blue “Advanced Search” bar, denoted (2), in screenshot 1 above. This will open a new screen as shown in screenshot 2 below.

To start your advanced search, first enter your key word(s) in the horizontal box “Key Word(s)”, denoted (1), in screenshot 2 above. By clicking on the arrow, denoted (2), you will reval a drop down menu that gives you the option of searching “Entire Posts”, or Titles only”. The “Titles Only” is particularly useful in searching for threads about a specific ship. For example if you enter ‘Exeter’ as a keyword (not including the speech marks), and then click on the “Search Now” button, all of the threads with Exeter shall be displayed as shown in screenshot 3 below.
By using the options in “Search by User Name” section, denoted (3), in screenshot 2, you can search for posts submitted by a particular user, or threads started by that user. To do this, enter the user name in the designated box, and use the drop down menu to select the desired option. If you are not sure of the exact name, uncheck the “Exact name” box, then type in what you know and click. This will then give you name options to choose from. This also gives you a quick shorthand method of entering the user name. For example, if you just type in ‘dread’ and then click after it, you will see you have three ‘dreadnought’ options to choose from.
The other options available in the “Search Options” section, are self-explanatory, and enable you to select a specific Forum in which to search, and restrict your search in terms of number of replies, date, and how you want the results presented.

If you wish to search in a particular sub forum only, for example ‘RN Ships & Crews’, then instead of accessing the search facility from the blue menu bar as previously explained, click on the button “Search this Forum”, denoted (1), in screenshot 4, below. Then proceed as described for searching the whole Forum. The advanced options are also available.

Similarly, if you wish to search a specific thread; once you have entered the thread in question, click on the “Search this Thread button, denoted (1), in screenshot 5, below. You can then search using the options already described.

Simple searching of sub forums may also be effected simply by re-arranging the way in which threads are displayed. This is sometimes useful if say, you want to see what ships beginning with a certain a letter have threads posted about them, or you are not quite sure of a spelling for example.
When you are displaying a particular sub forum, say RN Ships & Crews, go to the foot of the page, and you will see the default Display Options as shown in screenshot 6 below.

If you wanted to see all of the ships beginning with the letter ‘A’ say, first change the “Sorted By” option by clicking on the arrow, denoted (1), in screenshot 6, above. This will reveal a drop down menu as shown in screenshot 7, below.

Now select “Thread Title” from the options, and then change the sort order from “Descending” to “Ascending”. Click on the “Show Threads” button, and you will be presented with a screen similar to screenshot 8 below. The whole of the ‘RN Ships & Crews’ sub forum is now arranged in alphabetical order.

So as you can see, there are a number of ways of searching the Forum for the information you may be seeking. As mentioned previously, please take time to search the Forum before starting a new thread. This avoids duplication, and keeps everything together so that all members searching can find what they are looking more easily and quickly. Thanks.
Please do not hesitate to contact one of our Forum Moderators if you are having difficulty with the search facility, or need additional assistance.
