Recently formed since the "dissolution" of the old KGB/FSB "Border guard forces" i.e. to keep the enlightened Russian people at home wether they like it or not, the Coast Guards use a large number of craft of all shapes and sizes.

The largest ship (apart from the ice breakers) is a KRIVAK 3 frigate.
Armed with a 100mm Gun, eight 533mm torpedo tubes and two AK630 gatlings, it certainly seems larger and better armed than the western equivalents. AA defence is completed by a SA N 4 double mount forwards.
It can carry a Ka 27 or 29 heli in to the bargain.........

The photo shows one on exercise (background) with a US counterpart

It must be very reassuring to be so well PROTECTED! DFO

The COAST GUARDS also look after the River traffic especially on the borders and to help them in their task, they use river monitors.

Several types are used, but a common one is Projet 1248 MOSKIT which has a T55 tank turret as it's main gun.
A twin 12,7 turret, a grenade launcher, an AK 306 30mm gatling and a last emplacement either with a rocket launcher or a twin 25mm turret completes the weapons system.

The photo shows the newer colours of the ships, blue with white superstructure. (several smaller craft are moored to its starboard side).

That little tub carries enough weapons to have taken on half of the 50s vintage USN "cornbelt" fleet....and won! DFO

Pic is of the PCE that was based in my hometown back then...with one open mount 3" popgun and some twin 40mm.............

Sure, but your PCE is a real ship whereas the MOSKIT is no more than a floating tank !:D

The P 133 ANTARES (NATO: MURAYEV) patrol boat armed with a 76mm fore, an AK 306 gatling aft and two 406mm torpedo tubes:cool:

I don't know how that KAMOV is going to land aboard !

Well, that floating tank, just like the next one is HEAVILY armed and sure looks able to dish out as we said in the CORPS, "a world of hurt"....given their rather small sizes!

What a strange concept: a WARship capable of fighting!!! Seems a rather different approach compared to the bloated "yacht" known as USN LCS........ DFO

Well the Coast Guard service seems to be doing OK compared to the navy, it has apparently a large number of new ships and several more under construction. The FSB evidently have less budget restrictions......Projet 22640 RUBIN class, "only" armed by a single AK 630 30mm gatling but capable of being rearmed with the SSN 25 anti-ship missile system.

And I think Dr Who will plant the tardis on the heli deck!

Never did think about it did they get the inspiration for the daleks on looking at the old twin 25 mm turrets?

Glad to hear from you and many thanks for the picture of the svetylak. I've met several ex russian servicemen, some of whom served aboard the ships we see on this part of the site. It is always interesting to hear what they have to say:)
