How do I find a roster for HMS Vindictive when it was first launched - around 1918??
Is there anyone who can help direct me?
I would greatly appreciate it.
Jenn :)

Here are a couple of pictures of her Jenny. One when she was a seagoing fighting ship and the other when she was raised from the depths when she was used as a block ship in the First Word war.

I believe Jenn is referring to HMS Cavendish, which was renamed Vindictive and completed as a hybrid aircraft carrier.

Interesting ship. Apparently set the Japanese off on their hybrid spree 25 years later.

HI JENNYDEN, I was interested to read your post, as you mention 1918 is it that you think a relation was onboard at that time?
My father told us that his brother took part in the Zeebrugge raid of 23/04/1918 & was on the Vindictive. As we now have a copy of his records from the national archives we know that he was on the Hindustan (which served as depot ship for those taking part in the raid). He is shown as taking part in the ballot of crews to see who should receive the Victoria Cross following the raid.
Having searched for crew lists myself i seem to find it a hit & miss affair, some photos are on the web of crews, but often most of those shown are not known by name.

Perhaps Jenny would be good enough to confirm which Vindictive she is referring to.

Apologies for mangling Shakespeare. I came across HMS Vindictive and her remarkable and varied career and wondered if any other ship had played as many varied roles

1) Aircraft Carrier
2) Cruiser
3) Training Ship
4) Fleet Repair Ship
5) Destroyer Depot Ship

Hi Tigercat. Amended the title of your thread .... gives a members a clue as to what it's about ...!! I appreciate that it may go on to mention other ships.

It is important that thread titles include some sort of subject identifier so that the search engine has the best chance of finding topics when members are searching for information.

Here's Vindictive as a training ship. Anyone have any photos of her in her other roles?

you will find a few of her in her training cruiser role on my various posts as well, she was the TC in which Roddy MacDonald and my father completed their cadet training....

I totally agree that she seems to have played many parts in her long and varied career.

I have many pictures of her - here is a selection of her in different guises!

The final one shows her sadly arriving at Blyth on the 14th February 1946 ready for breaking. :(

Some great photos the last one is especially poignant with shades of the Fighting Temeraire

Here's another ship that played many roles in her time

the M/S Togo was a blockade Runner which returned to Germany on 23 November 1939

In April 1940, she was a support ship (Werkstattschiff) for the German invasion of Norway

She was rebuilt as a minelayer (Minenleger)[9] and based in Cherbourg from August to November 1940 as part of Operation Sea Lion, the planned German invasion of England.

In late 1942, Togo was converted into an auxiliary cruiser (Hilfskreuzer). As intended 'merchant harassment cruiser' (Handels-Stör-Kreuzer, HSK) Coronel
Unfortunately the British were expecting her and her break out to the open ocean was unsucessful

Later the same year, Togo was employed in a minesweeping role as a Sperrbrecher ('Pathmaker', to clear a safe lane through a minefield),[16] before being converted into a night fighter guide ship, under the command of Korvettenkapitän Rudolf Lück.

Handed over to the Royal Norwegian Navy on 14 March (and renamed KNM Svalbard in December 1946), she was then used as a fleet auxiliary to transport troops

She ended her career by returning to he roriginal role as a Merchant ship

Alan - I have clicked on the thumbnail of your photo of Vindictive pre-conversion (Post #5) for a closer look so it will appear as a 'download' in the stats. Thank you for posting it.
