Sailor,

can you use your connections etc, and get some decent pix of Oz 'Hams' from your neck of the woods ?

This would be of utmost value to us at the TCA who are compiling all the official records of the tons/hams/leys.

The Oz hams seem to be as rare as Rockin' horse 'doodah'....... and anything will be of utmost value.

HAhahahahhah! But you live in Thailand and no longer count Herk.
Once you go into exile, you lose your citizenship. But I'm still here.
Just because you found all those pics, it won't save you from ignominity.

Hi all,

I'm hoping to build a model for my father of the ship he served on, HMAS Snipe (M1102), in the 60's. (formerly the HMS Alcaston until 1961).

I contacted a bloke who runs the website in the post above on mainly the HMAS Curlew (M1121) and he's given me the phone number of someone in Perth to compare Snipe and Curlew differences. Unfortunately that's all sitting on my work computer and I'm stuck home sick so I thought I might as well keep searching anyway.

As well as downloading a heap of photos of the Aussie Ton Class sweepers I've also got these two pics to work from that very website:

http://users.qld.chariot.net.au/~dialabull/Layout_files/line%20drawing.jpg

http://users.qld.chariot.net.au/~dialabull/Layout_files/CurlewArmament_small.jpg

They were located here"

http://users.qld.chariot.net.au/~dialabull/Layout.htm

I was wondering/hoping/wishing that there may be any larger scans of some genreal Ton Class plans floating around anywhere that may be available for me to work from?

Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

I also posted this in the 'Ton Class' thread on the RN page, since it seems to get a lot of traffic.

Thanks everybody.
John D

John,
You could try this site: http://www.ranhistory.org/drawings/store/viewItem.asp?idProduct=1451

It will cost you a few dollars but when you are finished with the drawings you could get them framed and give them to you Dad as well.

Am desperate for photo's of the 16thMSS Oz sweeper photo's. Our archives are really short of anything worthwhile. If you can help please send to webmaster(at)tca2000.co.uk.

All photo's will be accredited to their owner if used. A book on the tons will be shortly produced to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Association in 2012. All help is needed to cover all the ships encounters which ever the navy they serve.
Rik
Please dig out those lost pix and pass them on. They are of the utmost importance.

If you wish to send them privately the email addy is :webmaster(at)tca2000.co.uk
Your help is much needed.
Thanks
Rik

Perhaps something here may help. These blow-ups of scanned small pics are certainly not the first-rate quality I imagine Rik is looking for, but I thought they might help modelmaker John D with a few details - i.e. anchor hawse and the way they mounted their crests in pic 1 & 5 (after plans); stern details in pics 2,3,4 - and 5 (clearest pic) is a general view of John's father's ship Snipe, again showing some port side structural details.

Strange to realize that there's not that much on these ships around here now - I'd have thought pics of them were very common. Oddly, I once owned the binnacle from one of them, mounted in an old yacht I had (but which had come to her in circumstances I don't think would bear looking into). I never took that much interest in these ships until I started to learn more about their particular qualities and service here on the forum decades later. Anyway, hope something here is useful.

Thanks kookaburra, great photos!!

Between what tonclass sent me, what you've supplied here as well as a couple from the thread on the RN board I have more detail than I ever could have imagined would be available. Especially the rear views which is something I hadn't managed to get so far.

And those RAN drawings on the site Hixy posted look very nice indeed....... may be worth the few bucks.

Thank you all so much. This is a LOT more than I could have hoped for.

Cheers all
John

Hi Tonclass!
I have a book on the deployment of one of the Oz Ton class during the Indonesion Confrontation. It was written by the ships CO. The name of the book is Hands to Boarding Stations. It may be of interest.
I have placed it in safe keeping in my library/admin system and can't find it.When I do I'll give you more details.

Cheers John O'C.

John O and John D, been meaning to say welcome to you both to the forum, but was looking around for some new Bathurst Class pics to go with it in the first case. Anyway, great to see that we seem to be bringing in some new Aussie members, and I've found your service insights very interesting.

John O I think TonClass has mentioned somewhere - yes, the RAN Ship Of The Day thread Post #153-157, presently on page 2 - that in fact he has a signed copy of that book Hands to Boarding, concerning HMAS Hawk. It was the ship that the sailor went berserk on and shot up the ship. Sounds like it would be a great read, and I must try to lay my hands on it. Cheers K.

Hi Kookaburra!
Thanks for the advice on Tonclass.I have temporarily abandond my search for the book(I really must get organised one day,but would that be just admitting defeat?).In my search however I did locate another book on the Oz Army Water Transport Vessels. It's titled Australian Army Watercraft. The Unknown Fleet. Author Brian Alsop.
It's only 88 pages, soft cover, but has some great pics and technical detail of various craft.Recommended read.If I can rise to the technological challenge (I'm only new to computers) I might try to put some pics up.
Cheers JohnO'C.

After leaving the service of th Australian Navy she was sold into civvy life and re-named M/V TROUBLESHOOTER. Can any of you fine Australian chaps tell me what happened to her after that ? Is she still afloat ?
Attached is a small photo of her in her bright yellow livery.

Any other photo's of her would be much appreciated.

Here are some pics of HMAS Gull and a couple of the other Ton Class - Curlew and Hawk.

Rik,

Not sure whether you will have picked up - as I just have belatedly - that the second photo in the post below, purporting to be HMAS Gull, has the hull number M1139, and is in fact HMAS Hawk.

Sorry. It's yet another mis-captioning on this disc of photos I bought.

Here's another pic, ex-HMAS Teal in her post-service life, name clearly marked this time.

That last pic of Teal is REALLY interesting!!!!! Never seen her in that guise before. Any chance of a REALLY BIG scan of her ?

Rik, it's off a disc at modest size and I'd already taken the previous post up to 140% of my copy from memory.

Here it is again taken up to 160% previous post size, but I think it's going to have shadow edges and lose any definition if I go up much farther. Anyway, you can experiment with it yourself I think. cheers

Indeed so. Taking a couple of posts here to complete the last 15 pics I presently have of these that may be in any way workable - but most off that disc and subject to the same size limitations. First pic is not bad. There's another of Gull, but so-so scan.

Here are two photos I took in November 1980 of Teal from HMAS Snipe in Thursday Island. Did'nt think of any historical importance at the time.

I'm not very computor literate and don't know how to change the size from when I originally scanned them.

When you set up a scan it should ask what DPI you wish to scan at (In the ADVANCED tab). All you have to do is increase the number and it'll do the rest for you...
