View Full Version : WW2 in the North
While searching out my brother's history, I found a number of accounts of aircraft carriers and their squadrons being involved in hunts for escaping battleships, as well as their usual run of 'hunt the uboat'; anyone got any comments, or recommended further reading?

I am of the opinion that when the original Northern Patrol; carried out by old RN cruisers along with AMCs, was "scrapped"as such in1940/41-it had to be replaced with some other type of ships and it comes as no surprise to me,that other similarly vulnerable ships. were used eg, escort carriers at some point in war at sea.My father,s ship HMS Anemone and HMS Abelia did the Northern Patrol in the winter of !941/42.
Unfortunately, although my library is quite large-there is a paucity of naval material .Sorry to be of so little assistance.

JS Thanks
In the interim, I found (and lost) some material that indicated that the FAA squadrons on the fleet escort carriers were involved in the searches for the German battleships which were in the North Sea.

Been having a look at Abe Books list and they have a wealth of rearsonably priced works on WW2 Escort Carriers eg.
Kenneth Poolman's Escort Carriers of WW2 and Escort Carrier versus Uboat
1941-45
P D Ommaney's Flat-top-The story of the Escort Carrier et al
Dependant on condition, under £5
Do have a look-they are on the internet.
