First Yasen-Class Sub Is Completed
Posted by M Pyadushkin at 6/16/2010 1:19 PM CDT

On June 15 Severodvinsk-based Sevmash facility officially completed the first multirole attack nuclear powered submarine of Yasen class (project 885)
The construction of this sub named after its home city Severodvinsk took 17 years.

The Yasen class, developed by St Petersburg Malakhit design bureau, is the forth generation sub, reportedly the Russian analogue to the US Seawolf class. It has a length of 120 meters, submersible deadweight of 13,000 tons, speed of 31 knots and an 85-man crew. The sub’s hull is reportedly made of low magnetic steel, with spherical bow sonar. The Yasen class subs are designed to strike both surface ships and submarines as well as to attack coastal targets. According to unofficial sources, they will be armed with torpedoes and cruise missiles such as anti-ship P-800 Onix, Kh-35, 3M-54E and 3M-54E1 and land attack 3M-14E.

Severodvinsk is to be launched soon and will go for basin and sea trials this year. The Russian Navy is to take it into service in 2011. In 2009 Sevmash laid down the second sub of this class, Kazan, that is expected to be completed in 5-6 years. The Navy plans to order 6 Yasen class submarines in total.

This event is covered in MILITARY PHOTOS on the RUSSIAN PHOTOS Page 2269.

Concern has been expressed on the quality of the work carried out, in particular concerning hull welding which as can be seen appears fairly sloppy at best.
