Born 18th. October1870. South Mimms, Potters Bar, Hertfordshire.
Educated at Dulwich College South London
Joined the Navy 15th. July 1887 as a Assistant Clerk.
1st. September 1887 posted to HMS Raleigh
18th. October 1891 Assistant Paymaster HMS Belleise.
Qualified as an Interpreter in German July 1893
6th. November 1901 Paymaster HMS St. George and Secretary to Commodore Alfred Leigh Winsloe of the Royal Yacht HMS Ophir taking the Duke and Duchess of York to Australia for the opening of the Federal Parliament.
6th. November 1905 Staff Paymaster HMS Sapphire.
From 1906 to 1907 on Study Leave Abroad and Qualified as an Interpreter in French July 1907.
1908 Secretary to Rear-Admiral Sir John R. Jellicoe on HMS Albemarle
6th. November 1909 Fleet Paymaster Commander HMS President.
Secretary to the C-in-C of the China Station 1910 to 1913 HMS Minotaur.
Secretary to the Admiral of the Dover Patrol 1914 to 1917 (Sir Reginald Bacon) HMS Arrogant.
Secretary to Rear Admiral Roger Keyes 1st January to 27th March 1918
Assistant to the Deputy Paymaster Director General at the Admiralty 1919.
Deputy Paymaster Director General at the Admiralty 1923 to 1925.
Paymaster Rear Admiral and to Retired List 18th. October 1925.
Awarded the Companion of the Order of the Bath June 1916 ( For Service in the Dover Patrol)
Awarded the Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour August 1918
Died 7th July 1949 in London
Noted on his Service papers:- Appreciation of services whilst in charge of recruiting station at Workingham during national crisis May 1926, conveyed by Brig. General E.J. Phipps-Hornby V.C.

On Page 24 of “The Dover Patrol” by Admiral Sir Reginald Bacon, he states “In Paymaster Commander Walter Gask, my secretary, I was also extremely fortunate. On many occasions in my absence he had to act on my behalf and always did so with judgement”. (this book also contains a good picture of Gask with Admiral Bacon, Flag-Lieut L. Vaughan Morgan and the Dover Patrol Chief of Staff Capt. H. Browning DSO.)

Edith Ethel Winter married Paymaster Rear-Admiral Walter Gask C.B., on 28 December 1907 in St. James's, Paddington. Edith Ethel Winter died on 27 April 1954 in 3 Addison Gardens, London.
