Do you just want Royal Navy personnel only on the database?
Looking at the "Crew Losses" posts, there are many ships that had:-
a) Commonwealth
b) Foreign (i.e.) Polish, French etc.
c) RNR
d) RNVR
e) Retired (Mainly Officers, called back for Hostilities Only)
f) Civilians on RN ships i.e. N.A.A.F.I. Managers and Assistants.

Most of the Trawlers/Drifters that served as A/S or M/S were manned by civilians or RNR crews. This also goes for the Armed Merchant Cruisers who may have only a few RN on board?

Any crew at all. The 'profile' field can be used to note any important info about a person. This applies to the 'crewtemplate' files only.

Kc / QPR, Have posted in ODIN.
May I suggest that in Data Base the class of ship / boat be entered eg.,
Detsroyer / Cruiser / Submarine.
This because some ships were sunk & later the same name was used for other ships / Subs ! Re Acheron loss / later was submarine !
Would help to point out `differerences'.

Thanks for the suggestion Dennis, I will incorporate that information on to the actual ship page - I don't actually know why it is not on the page, I've obviously just not programmed it in! Still, it is easy to fix.

Just to prove the info is actually there 'in the background', I've attached an extract from the raw database highlighting the entry for this acheron. You can see in the ShipType column that I've noted it as a Destroyer.

Also attached, you can see I've used that bit of data in the ship search results page. I searched for 'acheron' from the search page and have attached the screenshot. Try it for yourself here : http://www.worldnavalships.com/directory/shipsearch.php

Kc, thanks for that - did not see the reference to ships `class'.
I went to the Post that you gave & put in H.49 / H49 but it showed `No Ship by that Name ' ??? Do you only have SHIPS & NOT submarines in that `Search format' ?? Or have I missed something (AGAIN) ??

The database of ships is a work in progress, which is why H49 is not yet there. I am not putting the ships into the database in a particular order, it just so happens that of the 1500+ ships that are there, it is not one of them.

I'll take the list (thank you) as it is but I will have to do the donkey work to get it into the database. If you look at the 'Read This First' thread in this section of the forum, everything should be explained there.

On the Crew template You have the "Official No." Column and "Date of birth" column

On the Service Records for single men you have neither is there any reason for this?

Both of these are very important for researchers looking for a certain person (John Smith comes to mind)

Of course, Dave.

When I add a service record, I also add a crew entry.

For example, say sailor A served on ships X, Y and Z.

In the crew database, I hold all the general details of sailor A (including a comma separated list with X, Y, Z for his ships)

In the service periods database, I have each service (X, Y and Z) listed as separate entities, each with a backward referral to sailor A.

It's complicated, but using this mechanism I can engineer some nice search engines, without breaking the server. For example, I could ask the databases to give me all crew from ship X. That's fine, but with the backward referencing in place, I can ask the database to give me all records of people who served on ship X between date Y and date Z.

Much more powerful and future-proof, but slightly confusing from the outside, I admit.

When you post a service record, just add any relevant details to the post you attach it to. There is a reason why I haven't added that column, and I'm sure I'll remember it eventually!

Hi Guys,
Not wanting to confuse things but i just wanted to say, there was also a HMS Diana H49, which went to Canada 6 September 1940 as HMCS Margaree and kept the same No H49 until she was sank with loss of 143.
Sorry if you already knew.
