Karen, the first 2 medals are both commemorative medals you can find details of them here.......

There are several other medals available that are related to RN and Police service, these medals are not issued but have to be bought.
Some people agree with them, some don't.
The last medal you show of your fathers is the Police long service medal as you probably know.
Personally I like the idea of medals being available for those who have served in the forces for many years but not long enough to be awarded long service medals, or were not involved in some of the campaigns for various reasons.

Nice to see that his Police Long Service Medal is one of the slightly older cupro nickel ones and not one of the current types. Although the cupro nickel medals look somewhat dull in their appearance they are infinitely better than the current issues which look like they are rhodium plated i.e. very shiny, which makes them look really tacky.
Also the older medals were issued in a cardboard case which had the reciepient's name on it (which is also shown on the medal) but also gives the name of the force he served in. This info is not shown on the more plush later medal cases.
Thankyou Alan for the Link very interesting, did not realize you could buy Medals...I always thought they were Automatically issued...There something else I have learnt....Thanks again...
Thankyou Odin also..as Dad was issued with his Police Medal at retirement in 1992...it is Dull looking but looks good..at least you cannot see the reflection of your face in it..
Thankyou again..it all makes sense to me now....
I also learn something new each day, I had no idea those medals were available as I would be entitled to several of them. I'll sure give it some thought as it would be nice to hand over something to my son, so showing I served with pride.
