Another ship on the way, the GORSHKOV class.

Apparently one launched and at least one in the yard. Don't know which one this is.

Note the VLS pits in the bow photo.

As soon as new photos appear let's post ! :)

Best wishes to all

The construction of a second Admiral Gorshkov class frigate will begin this year in St. Petersburg, Russian Navy Commander Adm. Vladimir Vysotsky said on Wednesday.

The first Admiral Gorshkov class vessel is being built at the St. Petersburg-based Severnaya Verf shipyard, and will be launched in 2011.

"We will start construction of the second frigate at this shipyard in addition to existing orders under the state arms procurement program," Vysotsky said at the opening of the International Naval Show in St. Petersburg.

Severnaya Verf started building the Admiral Sergei Gorshkov frigate - the first in the series - in February 2006. According to military sources, Russia's Navy intends to procure up to 20 such vessels.

The frigate has a displacement of about 4,500 metric tons, a length of over 130 meters (430 feet), a maximum width of 16 meters (51 feet), and a range of over 4,000 miles.

The main weapons of the ship are reported to include eight SS-NX-26 Yakhont anti-ship cruise missiles, a new 130-mm gun mount, a Medvedka-2 ASW system, and a Hurricane medium-range air defense missile system.

"We intend to sharply increase the construction of ships of the main classes, and we have already taken the first steps in this direction," the admiral said.

However, the Navy commander said Russia could order a number of warships abroad.

"We do not rule out the possibility of buying foreign-made vessels," he said in answer to a reporter's question.

Russia has not purchased warships abroad since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

As far as the photo: foremast structure sure doesn't match the "stealth type" shapes shown in drawings and 3D renderings??? Is the real ship in the photo actually one built for INDIA, given that Gorshkov supposedly won't be put in service until 2011?? DFO

To answer my own question: do believe it is one of the 3 Russian built Indian frigates...here is one, properly ID'd.

So far cannot find a shot of Gorshkov in the water.....DFO :D

There does seem to be a bit of confusion (perhaps done so on purpose).

The "Indian ship" appears to be a (new) TALWAR class frigate designed as a much modified version of the KRIVAK class.

In any case, I think we'll see them rather quickly when they do appear.

Best wishes, Jim:cool:

Apparently there are four possible configurations of the GORSHKOV given the missile fit and the customer requirements. We will see the first one shortly....

Apparently the first unit of the GORSHKOV is nearing completion to be launched in 2011.

Normally they will replace larger units, the SOVREMMENY and UDALOY classes being at the end of their service life when the first batch of GORSHKOVS finally enter service.

Will the Russians replace the KIROV and SLAVA classes by something as big ?

Only time (and budgets) will tell.................

That drawing looks very very similar to the frigates currently being built in Kaliningrad for India (Talwar class, project 1135.6):

Certain Ru sources have dropped that the GORSHKOV was to be launched on the 29th of october............

However she seems to be half painted and is missing a radar dome and the bow sonar...........

Bets before the 1st of january ? (not saying 2011 either!!!!!)

Afew more photos showing the disposition of the two sets of launching cells, a 36 point pit for the SAM and an 8 point pit for the SSM.

Finally the yard photos don't appear to have a date, but it is evident that she's is nowhere ready to sail..........
