I have a tour of the dockyard and the site of the new museum at Torpedo Bay arranged by the kind CO of the Museum. Are there any museum ships or other naval points of interest in and around Auckland?
Any assistance appreciated!

Hi Mac,I'm sure you will enjoy your dockyard tour.I can only assume that the (old)museum is still operating whilst the new site is being prepared.Museum ships are rather thin on the ground here in Godzone, however across the harbour at downtown Auckland is the National Maritime Museum which is well worth a visit. Not a lot of naval exhibits there, though. If you happen to visit Wellington, there is an excellent museum on the waterfront, Museum of City and Sea,but I don't recall much naval stuff there either.Enjoy your stay here, and best regards.Geoff Brebner

Actually the museum is closing May 1st, I arrive on the third. :-(
The CO is taking me to the Torpedo Bay site of the new Museum, and a mining installation, and the yard. I`m facinated with the HMNZS Canterbury. I saw the Wellington and Otago last year in Williamstown, be nice to see them up close, I hope...The family has always wanted to see New Zealand, and we are so excited to finally have the chance. I`m sure I`ll find lots of interesting things to keep me busy.
Best from Halifax, Cheers Geoff!

Is there a reputable source of Naval movements in Auckland? I'd like to get pics of ships underway while I'm there.

Hi Mac

I see you are being taken round by the CO of the museum, he wou!d be your best contact for any information, I suggest. Signals listing naval movements used to be issued weekly on Fridays for the following week. Longer forecasts are drawn up by the Operations staff, now in Wellington. Navy PR will have lots of photos of ships underway and may prove a good source of info and photos. I am guessing that not much has changed thes last four years.

Have a great visit, Mac
