I must submit this reasonably good photo of a small russian ship.
Can anyone help in its' identification.
I think it may be a bouy tender........
Many thanks in advance

Hi Cavalry Man.Could well be a Buoy Tender, but the object aft of the funnel looks like an old McCann Diving Bell for submarine rescue. The two objects at the after ends could be Marker Buoys. The Russians scrapped their INDIA Class rescue subs some time ago,and after their botched attempt to rescue survivors from the KURSK,they may well have gone back to the old methods for rescue.

It is a Sov era PRUT class sub rescue ship; 2 left as of @ 4 years ago: Epron in the Black Sea (looks like she's going out of Sevastopol)...plus SS-83 in the Pacific. 2770 tons, std. 89.7M x 14.3M mav of 18.8 knots. Much larger class originally..........DFO ;):D
In this 3/4 view you can see the rescue bell...based on, I assume, the one created in the late 30s by USN..........

EPRON is a Prut-class Submarine rescue ship (ASR) first deployed in 1959 and assigned as a full submarine rescue vessel in 1969. Re-fitted in 1999. 3380 tons full load and about 295 feet long. Diesel powered. The Russian designation is Spasitel'noye Sudno, meaning rescue ship. EPRON is an acronym for Ekspeditskaya Podvodnik Rabot Ososbogo Nazhnacheniya, The Russian Navy's submarine rescue service.
