View Full Version : Sedov
A little while ago our local €urocity was selling models of famous sailing ships that were actually quite detailed and attractive. Unable to resist such things and especially for €1 each, I bought models of Bounty, La Serenissima, Victory, Cutty Sark, a particularly fine Vasa and a few others. One ship was a Soviet vessel named Sedov and I would like to find out more about this seemingly fine ship. I could look on the Internet but I would prefer the more informed enthusiasm of members for information. Though flying the Hammer and Sickle, to my untutored eye this looks to be a pre-revolutionary vessel, possibly renamed. I would also surmise that it may have been a training ship. I have to say that, though a student of Russian history, this name does not strike a chord with me. Am I missing the entirely obvious and should be ashamed of myself?

The SEDOV is the largest sailing ship in the world today. It was of German construction and was confiscated in 1946.
A four masted bark, its nominally posted to the Russian Baltic Fleet and is operated by Kaliningrad Higher Marine Engineering College.
A very impressive ship, it is a regular visitor to various "TALL SHIP" meetings.
Best wishes and good luck with the model.........
(I once bought a Beriev 12 seaplane model in the same conditions)

I wonder how the Germans must feel when they see their old ship sailing about still in Russian hands??
Probably pleased after all these years?

Hi, here are a little more details about this beauty for you. The Sedov was built in 1921 at the 'Krupp-Germania'-shipyard and at this time her name was 'Magdalene Vinnen'. In the 1930's she was renamed to 'Kommodore Johnson' and as far as I know she was sailing as a german sail-training-ship. After the 2nd WW she went to Russia as reparation, has been renamed to 'Sedov' and disappeared for a long time (being used after restauration in the far north as a research-ship). Nearly fourty years had to pass by, until she reappeared at the Cutty-Sark Tall-Ships Races at the beginning of the 1980's, and since that time you can find her every year at sailing festivals and many european ports, etc.
Since 1995 she is painted black, because she doubled the 'Pamir', a ship that sunk in the 1950s.
Her actual owner is the Murmansk Technical State University, and the Sedov is used as a training-ship for students. Right now she is at the shipyard at her homeport Murmansk for restauration and in four weeks she will return to the north sea.
A little more details:
Length: 117,5m
Height (masts): 58m
Width: 14,7m
Sails: 4.195m˛
Everyone can book a journey (from 1 day duration to 2 weeks) as a trainee and participate at the work on board: steering, setting sails, helping the cook, etc.
