Hi ,I think my Great Uncle Wally Landels who at age of 17 went down with his ship in 1917 received the same medal. I do not have a picture of it. I think it also added on "for zeal".
Would be interested to hear of anything you find out.
Many thanks.

Hi Chaps,

Best way to find out is the Russian archives, (can give you a contact address for this), their British officer papers always show the Russian awards, but if a rating won a Russian award you can only find it on the papers the ratings carried on him, so his original papers, the ratings papers held in Kew England do not show these awards. I can't find any lists for British men from 1915.

Wally Landels who at age of 17 went down with his ship in 1917 , was he an Officer? At first look at your post I thought it might have been Walter Landale who did receive a Russian award and went down with his ship in 1916 but was not 17!

Hi, It seems that the lower classes, ie. 4th and 3rd of St. Anne, were quite widespread awards. They were given out by dozens to officers of visiting foreign navy ships, to foreign technicians and officials who worked for Russian shipbuilding and armament projects, etc. To be given a St. Anne or St. Stanislav, an allied officer did not have to perform something extraordinary - just be there at the right time? and the citation would probably say for meritorious service or something like that.

I have a photo of Commander Dunberdale wearing his St. Anne but cannot see it very well. We thought he got it in around 1920, but have been told that it was before that; possibly at the time H.M.S Marlborough was helping members of the Imperial family escape. That is all I can find on the St. Anne.
Chris.

I've got a privately produced (incomplete) list of foreign awards to UK service personnel for WWI and just after. It gives the London Gazette dates where the awards were authorised.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that it covers a lot of awards, I cannot find either of the names mentioned in this post (Dunberdale / Dunderdale and Landels / Landale).

Some photos of the awards are below (with and without swords)

Hi Odin,

there seems to be so many men missing of awards lists and i don't really know why?

I just found a rating who got the St George Medal and it was only through pure coincidence i found him. I had his RN papers, also have some Russian Medal lists and so on. But i could see he had RAN listed on his British papers. The Australian navy papers are free online for men of the Great War and after, and low and behold on his Austrailain papers it mentions when he even recieved this medal.

Strange, not mentioned on his RN papers, but RAN yes, and yet he was RN when he got it?

Officers do show their awards on their actual papers you can get a Kew.

Cheers

Here is one of his promotions:

No doubt a more detailed search will pull up more entries for him

Odin many thanks.Sadsac posted this for me.
Dunderdale Wilfred A Hon.Lt Rnvr 88x957 & 958
Julius-N.I.O. Savastopol Captain Phillimore 07.09.20 N/E
Post War-M.02383/20 MBE(M)
I wish to recommend him most strongly for promotion to Lieutenant R.N.V.R.,and for the award of the Order of the British Empire.
He has conducted himself most ably and successfully, his infomation was excellent and reliable, and he has been of the utmost value, not only to me, but to others. It was thanks to him that a Bolshevik plot to size a submarine was baffled, and i cannot overate the assistance he has given me in every way.
He has an intimate Knolage of the Russians and their caracter, which he has used to the best advantage of H.M.Service,and hisservices are thoroughly worthy of reward.
Captain Phillimore is the name above Dunderdales in the london Gazette you posted?
