Your uncle was a brave man James, crews that were torpedoed in those icy Artic waters were lucky to recover from the cold water, I`ve heard tales at our reunion from shipmates who have experienced ships being sunk and men in the water lasting less than 5 minutes on those Russian Convoys --not a happy draft to be on at that time but someone had to do it--your uncle deserved his award, thanks for posting the story,mate.

I saw El Fateh (ex HMS Zenith) tied up alongside when we went to see Tariq (ex HMS Whimbrel) in Alexandria in 2005. She looked in better condition than Whimbrel and some of her depth charge launchers were lying on the adjacent dockside (those on Whimbrel were removed some time ago). I've got a few pictures somewhere which I will try to find.

I don't know if Zenith is still afloat but apart from the travelling, that would be the ideal venue for a Z Class reunion!
