I am reserching my family history and remember that my father told me he served in the "cod wars" on HMS Duncan. His name was Frank Drury, I'm not sure of his rank. I wondered if anyone out there had ever heard of him or knew him, maybe someone just has a list of officers and men that served aboard her. I would be extremey happy to hear from anyone who may have any information at all regarding this vessel. I believe he would hve served on Duncan sometime around 1958. I assume that he did natiobnal Service and would have been required to do that in 1948. As far as I recall he said he stayed on so would have been on Duncan at the end of the 50's. He passed away ten years ago so I am unable to get any further details.
Many thanks in advance
A Cameron-Black
Hi Adrian,
You don't mention which years your father served aboard DUNCAN ?I'm sure you already know that DUNCAN was a Type14 or Blackwood Class anti submarine frigate Launched from the yard of J I Thornycroft 30 May 1957completed 21 October 1958.
She did indeeed serve in the various cod wars with Iceland DUNCAN was part of the fishery protection squadron from 1958/1959 before being transfered to the Portland based 2nd Training Squadron in 1965.
DUNCAN spent her last years as immobile tender to HMS CALEDONIA at Rosyth before being broken up in 1985.
Regards
Dave
There were three "Cod wars" The first may have been the one your Father may have been involved in. That was between 1st Sept to 12th Nov. 1958.The next "war" was Sept 1972 to Nov 1973 the third was Nov.75 to june 76.

Hi there,
I believe that you are right. He moved to London from his home town of Hull in 1960 so it must hve been the 1958 one.
Thanks so much
Adrian
Cod War 1963 versus Thor and Vaedderen weren't allowed ashore in Iceland but Faroes aok. Five weeks at sea in a type 14 in stormy stormy weather.
I realise that this is a very late reply but I will post anyway.
Two items that appeared in The Times which mentions HMS Duncan in June 1959
