London Gazettes:
31.5.1912 Placed on the Retired List at own request 31.5.1912
1.8.1919 promoted from Lieut-Comdr (retd) to Commander (retd) 5.7.1919
He would presumably have became a retired Lt Cdr when that rank was established in 1914 with seniority probably 30.6.1909 being 8 years after promotion to Lieutenant.
Thanks Richard, much appreciated:
The story goes: Charles Young was the son of Lamont Young, Geological Surveyor for the NSW Mines Department. In 1880 Lamont and his offsider Max Schneider were instructed to Montreal Goldfields near Bermagui to survey the site for the Mines Dept. After checking in with the Mines Warden and Police; Young, Schneider and three men from Bateman’s Bay were never seen of again…one of the men’s boat (Thomas Towers) was found stove in from the inside at a place now called Mystery Bay with Young’s and Schneider’s belongings inside. Some bullet casings were also found. In 1883 a Select Committee was established in Sydney where witnesses were called and evidence received, a Committee Report was written about the case in 1884 – Charles Young had a copy of this report on the Irresistible when she went down in the Dardanelles in 1915, the Report went down with her. Sixteen years later he wrote to NSW Police requesting another copy of the report.
The book starts in the Dardenelles with Charles Young!

Lt. Cmdr Charles Lamont Lind Young, RN was my great grandfather!!
He's on the deck of the HMS Irresistible, one of the British Navy's attack force bound for the Dardanelles in the ill-fated naval attack on Gallipoli. Despite its name, the Irresistible was sunk and Charles injured in the process.
Because of his injuries he was invalided out of the navy.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, a group of farmers in New Zealand established the "New Zealand Sheep Owners Acknowledgement of Debt to British Seamen Fund" (catchy name!)
Because of this fund, it was possible for Charles to send his sons to New Zealand to learn sheep farming, and eventually the whole family followed.
His son, Lamont Arthur Lind Young was his eldest son and my grandfather.
My uncles and cousin are busy building the history of my grand father and my great grandfater. Feel free to contact me if you think I can assist.
