Has anyone got any of these books?
Apparently there are four editions to date
1860 - 1905
1906 - 1921
1922 - 1946
1947 - 1995
Quite expensive to buy therefore I'd like to know before committing to buy any.
ie whats its submarine content like?
Does it list every submarine or is it just each class?

Fred,

We have them all in "Explosion - the Museum of Naval Firepower" in Gosport. At the moment I am in Texas but will check them out for you on my return to the Uk, unless somebody else is able to answer your query before I return.

I've got most of the above, 1922 - 1946 is falling apart. They are just about THE standard general reference books for naval ships.

A Good reference on submarines is:-

Submarines of World War Two

Ermino Bagnasco

Cassell & Co

ISBN 1-85409-532-3

Polycell:

I have to agree with Jarrow Dave: Conway's are excellent references in their details and comprehensive listings of the world's warships. they cover design and use in succinct formats.

One great thing is that the Conway's volumes often correct the "errors" of many editions of Jane's Fighting Ship's and other "annuals" produced before and during WWII, while nations were trying to deceive each other about ship characteristics and such--things Jane's, who got their data publicly, would not be able to pick up on until much later. Check for example, the displacements listed for Japanese carrier Akagi in the 1936 Jane's and the 1922-1945 Conway's.

I own all of them, and the covers are falling off them because I grab them off the shelf so often. I would also say that they are typical of that company's work overall. I often find British productions to be of superior quality over other productions from other countries...not all the time, but often enough to set them as the standard to be compared against in my book.

Regards.

Just to add that we have copies of all four in our offices, and I personally have three of the four at home - they are used on a daily basis both at work and home.

Don't forget the 1947-1982 2-volume set.

That version is in my local college library, and I have seen it elsewhere... I would assume that the 1947-1995 version is an update, including recent ships (but dropping out the detailed coverage of the 1970s ships the earlier version provided).

To answer Fred's original question - the submarines are listed by Class. Under each Class there is a short discussion of the key new features of the submarine type and occasionally some additional info. on specific subs. This is followed by very limited information on each submarine giving the launch date and fate only.
